Well, I have a chance to get some at a dollar a sq foot, and am looking for ways to use it for more than just pouches. It's 2.3 - 3.5 oz. One of those things I don't generally need, but sometimes something comes up where I REALLY needs it. So, general concensus is that it would be wrong for shoes? H...

They wore belts in the 11th C. You gotta be able to hang your sword somewhere.

What sorta shoes are you doing? Can't see that in the pic.

Leather for Shoes

Is upholstery leather suitable for shoes/boots? If so, what weight range? Nothing lasted.

Would a rondel helmet qualify for the event? Or is that more continental than English?

Or does it miss the timeframe?

MJ's Cool Weekend

Since the last thread has been utterly blasted, I thought I'd start this one, cause I want to hear about and see more piccy goodness of MJ's weekend. What I got to see before the floors flooded from thepissing contest looked awfuly cool.

Love to hear/see more.

I would think that an opportunity for an armoured shin to come flying up into my soft and squishies would be fairly common. It would be the kicking and kneeing that would concern me more than the weapon. It's a tough angle from the weapon arm.

The bleeding fingers is cause the leather was stiched by hand. The sewing awl wouldn't punch through it, so I used a lacing chisel and just hand stiched. Getting through the fabric and padding was actually more of a pain than the leather. Ugh, yeah. I don't think I coulda gotten thru the 2 layers o...

That's be even better. Saves a million hours of flattening.

Way nice, Ant. The flattening alone must have taken a week.

Do you just smack the round ones with a hammer, or do you have a tool to make roundies into flats? If you do, mind posting a pic, and saying where it came from?

Stack leather scraps. I mean assuming you have acess to some. Take Barge cement, glue them to thickness (leave a space for your rattan). Cut to desired shape. Bandsaw would be best. Then, soak in Duke Gavin's 10:1 Titebond3 glue mixture. I mean SOAK it. Much longer than for armour. Make sure it's ut...

You can sort of jury rig for planishing by using a smooth, hard, flat surface, and tapping with the dishing hammer. It works like a planishing stake and hammer, only upside down, and essentially you're striking with the stake, and the flat faced hammer is stationary. I think I remembered that right....
