All this is really interesting (no, seriously, it is...not joking), but is any of this helping to answer th OP's question on colors?

Can somebody give him a good summation? I mean, at least a best educated guess (since that's what we've established is the best we can do)??

Thanks,

So you're saying that tigers were never used in decorating Japanese armour? Seriously, Eff, I don't know this stuff. No need to act like I had previous knowledge as to whether or not tigers were used. If I had known, I wouldn't have mentioned it. But I didn't know, hence the question. Christopher

Well, I quess that's the direction I'll go, then. I don't think the fencing rules will let me get to close to the right blade. I may be able to use an SCA cut and thrust blade for regular rapier...I hope. But it will probably be a rapier blade. Tho, I think I shall go with the widest blade I can be ...

Any idea where there are photos of examples? On an image search, I get all types of sallets, birds, moths, sea life, and even a couple models.

I'm not really sure which of the hats are true celatas.

More acurate wuestion, I guess; When did these hilts start to appear, and when did they start gaining lighter blades?

Cool, thanks, Chef. No appearances on English archers that we know of?

So they were common, but not as common as the sallet, or the chapel. Often on lower end guys and archers?

Any reason why they were usually on common men?

Thanks,
Christopher

Outside of Italy, that is. Did they sail the Channel? Did they explore Africa with the Portugese? Who liked em, and what was the height of there use, timewise?

I normally do it on the flesh, but sometimes, I gotta do it on the grain. Sometimes, that big friggin tanner's mark, or brand has to be avoided fairly closely, and I can't do that from the back. I'm thinking about drilling around those, tho, so I can do them from the flesh and avoid marks. I've only...

I think he's saying that a guy with a finger buckler who calls it an estoc is roughly equivalent to a guy with an itty bitty shield over his fingers, and a single pointed short spear. It's all in the nomenclature. Or maybe I totally missed his point I'd rather see spuntop helmets gone than something...

So these hilts would be right for arming swords of the time?

What sort of blade would we be talking about?

Actually by guys on the ground, I was also referring to knights whose horses had met the pointy part of an arrow as well as infantry. Was sorta hoping to hear they had pecker protection for such events. Guess they just risked it for the most part. Were maille faulds padded? Thanks, Christopher

Or is that sorta still too early for the idea of lighter civilian blades?

You mean sorta like this hilt, Chef, only with one guard upwards? I'd have to forgive the finger ring size, as I'be wearing a slightly padded glove with it, so the extra size becomes functional to me. One of those little compromises. Anyone have good pics of extant and repro armours of this sort? Burgundians and English were fond of them, weren't they?

Especially any wth the Italian sallet style rather than barbute.

English in the 15thC, Cian?

Would this have been found all over Europe in say the 1460-1480 range, or just primarily in Italy?

Would it have reached Iberia and the the central HRE by then?

Thanks,
