I'm not new to the SCA, but some of my reasons are much like new guys. Now keep in mind, I do want to get on the heavy field. I don't want to get broken. I am self-employed in a very new business venture, I have no insurance, and would really like to not need to visit the ER and then do follow ups. ...

My experience was very similar. In 2003, I went to a fairly big event in Midrealm (where I lived at the time), a Kingdom level war practice for Pennsic. I don't have any idea how many fighters were there. But most of them looked gut-wrenchingly awful. I went expecting it to look at *least* as good a...

So, is that striking edge the only part with the foam? And is it clackered, or does the mass of the leather behind whump enough to be acknowledged? That looks a lot like stuff I do out of thinner leather and fewer layers for faires. I thinks I'm gonna have to try one all beefed up now.... Thanks! Ch...

True, but we're getting back into a monthly outlay of money. If I could do that, I probably wouldn't even have started the thread, I'd be hitting iron at a gym. But the lack of monthly due money forced me to look into more home-based plans using what I got on hand. But there's been a lot of good sug...

Oiling Leather
I'm looking to use oil to take undyed leather to a nice brown color. Which is the best oil to use for this? I'd like to avoid using an actual dye, I just want the oil to stain the leather evenly. I'm thinking neatsfoot, maybe?
Thanks!

Can't say that it will help for sure, but, you can have a look at this thread: m Ive settled on (in my mind) 13th century Saxon/Bohemian. Largely because buying properly made 16th century Saxon clothes is expensive, and my wife refuses to make anything post 1300 due to complexity. And as I hate sewi...

Rootin frootin slash mark..... I fixed it. One quarter of an inch. I appreciate the offer. I think tho, I'm gonna hang onto these and see how it goes in the long term. Nothing experimented, nothing learned. I doubt they need opened up. Probably more me fumbling than anything wrong with them. Thanks!...

Hilts for Rattan
A few nights ago, I was researching...something. I was zonked, and can't remember what I was looking up. But somewhere I came across SCA hilts that were a single piece for pommel/grip/crossquard. The rattan just plugged down into the pommel thru the guard and grip like a tang. Only I don't remember ...

I'm doing this as a separate review, as Viking Leather Crafts doesn't make these. They're very good looking boots. Stitching was well done, the nails (I got the nailed on sole, as opposed to turnshoe) seemed well set, nothing stabbing me or hitting the floor when I wore them. There were two weeeeeee...

I just got my Norse 2-toggles boots from VLC today. Frank did a great job of answering emails and got them here very quickly. Woulda been quicker, but Monday was Columbus Day, so they shipped out a day later. Very good experience, and I'll very likely buy from Frank in the future. Thanks! Christopher

Why not go back to leather disks? Just harden them. 15 seconds in boiling water, and you get a thick wood-hard button. Or just soak it in a 1 part Titebond 3 (waterproof) glue to 5 parts water solution. put in the oven for 10 or 15 minutes. Easy, shapable, and should clack. Can even make them a bit ...

Link to the Red Kaganate:
http://www.redkaganate.org/
It's in Norman's sig line. His site, I believe.
It looks like the earliest clothing he's covering is the 9-10 century Magyar.
I love that name. Magyar.

Well said. Even if the debate rumbles on in this thread... I too am not a fan of combat archery, and I share some of Johnathan's concerns, and yet I am determined to work with its practitioners in good fellowship at finding middle ground. I do not feel that this conversation is appropriate to this t...

For the sole. go to a cobbler. The guy I worked for would tear off the old soles, put on new ones in about 20 minutes for about 10 bucks. The right tools (expensive ones, mind you) make it go real fast. I wouldn't glue a leather sole to it. I'd go with a thin modern one. Talk to the cobbler, tell hi...

13th Century Archer's Secondary Weapon?
What would he have carried? A dagger, no doubt, but, a short sword? Small axe or hammer? How about a falchion?
Thanks!

Actually, I'm not being grammar police, I'm being practical. Let's say you need to go and appeal. But they are meeting on the opposite side of the continent. Say you're from Nova Scotia, and they're meeting in LA. CAN you really afford to go there? Maybe yes, likely no. Not if you plan on doing any ...

Don't worry about it Daithi. There's people who hate CA so much, they'll rant and rage and piss in anyone's Wheaties who says they just realized they like it. I've seen the arguments blaze on here before I even got involved in the SCA. Play within the rules, but play how you wanna play. If someone t...

Watergaroon? You know if his water is all discolored, or if there's just hunks of rusty metal in the water? Cause I'd love to be able to do it without everyone complaining about the tin pickled fish smell. Back to vinegaroon for a minute - it actually doesn't require the vinegar. there's a rather we...
