So, why all the long shields in effigies? Mark of status? Just the style cause they look good on an effigy?

Thanks!

Thirteenth Century Crossbows

I've noticed that in the Mac Bible and in the William of Tyre images I've found that the crossbows have very long prods and they're wood, rather than metal colored. Were they really that much longer than say a metal prod? Or is this just artistic style? Or do we not know for sure?;) Thanks! Christop...

I was going thru the images from the Mac Bible, and , even tho I've looked at the white one above a bunch, I just noticed the hooks holding the door of the tent open. How did this work? Is it maybe evidence for a spoke-wheel design for support, or is it something else? Can't say why, but I never not...

Really? I woulda never thought the crow's footed guy lines were an indicator of sloped walls. Neat

Do we know if they used side poles ever?

Vinegaroon is teh awesome, but it takes about 2 weeks to make it. That reminds me, I gotta get some going now that I'm moved.... If worst comes to absolute worst, acrylic paint. Don't expect it to hold up undamaged, but it will cover any errors you made. It'll get all stipply and kinda crack a bit, ...

Is it my imagination, an optical illusion, or just the artist's style, but do some of those 13th century fellas at the MCS site have schynbalds on?

And are those knee cops on Hamo de Westin dated 1189?

Yeah, but that's not really what I was getting at. They were just the only photos I had ready access to of extant tents...lol

So was the sloping cultural? Or was it for more practical reasons?

Do we have anything firmer than an educated guess? lol

Thanks!

Aaron...does this mean you've welded pie pans? Wow. lol I don't think he made it. It says pre-owned. I know I for one wouldn't call something I made pre-owned unless I had used it for more than just a "Does it work?" period. And if he had one of those, it would be obvious to him that it do...

Pavilion Question Solely out of Curiosity-Not for Bulding

Since I've spent much of my not moving or unpacking free time the past several months staring at tents and artwork showing tents, I've noticed looking thru pics of extant rounds, that not all of them seem to have been designed for slanted walls. At least not in all times. The Carols V tent for examp...

I've thought of that, but a can of water sealer isn't too expensive. And I can get the latex-lined kind from Home Depot. I know they go oven in no time flat, but I'm not really in the tent during daylight hours. Not after Mr. Sol wakes me up, anyway. Mostly run in and run out. Especially at faire. I...

Can't do a wedge. I'm always banging into them. Really a worry when it's raining. I just don't fit into them unless they are over 10 feet tall. Ok, technically I fit, but not practically. Besides, my plan (at this point) is to make a wedge-shaped top to a wall tent out of a big canvas drop cloth. Th...

Yup, it's for sleeping in. I actually tried that sorta tarp. I always thought it was cool. well, when I say that sort, I mean I took a piece of canvas and gave it a shot. it was full of fail. They could be, but they all look to have center poles. I'd interpret them as round. Buying enough canvas for a round would cost near as much as I can get a round for. I can get one for under $400, not counting poles ropes stakes and shipping. Certainly the difference wouldn't be enough to justify it...

ISO Custom Button Maker

I need one gross of custom brass or bronze buttons. Little acorns. Simple buttons with no designs on them. Maybe 1/2" in diameter. I won't need them till after Pennsic, so there's no super rush. The wonderful lady putting them on the garment for me won't be back till after then. At that point, ...

I love that Mac helm. Yeah, try to fix the asymmetry, but don't lose any sleep over it. Period helms are often a bit whopperjawled.

Good leg protection, too.

Cool. The only concern I have is what everyone is wearing. That looks later to me. I'd guess 15th century.

Do you have another example? I'll take late 12th century. Not like it would be hard to slip that impression a bit earlier.

13th Century....Tents Again

Like I said in my post on 13th century clothing: m I've had to temporarily abandon the 16th for an earlier century due to cost of clothing and goods. So, no real confirmed difference for summer wear between two layers of medium linen and one med linen and one light wool, except for maybe the clamminess.

How light is the light weight wool of which summer wear is made?

Fabrics Question

Here is something I am curious about. How can wool be such a great way to keep warm, yet also a great way to keep cool? Wouldn't it's radiating effect when paired with linen make it chilly in the winter? I know wool is fantastic in the cold, I'm not questioning that. I'm just wondering if anyone kno...

Thanks, Karen! Guess I was typing when you posted that...lol. This should keep me busy for a few hours.
