Greg, you look positively spiffing! Are those musicians wearing livery, or is that just fashionable for musicians in the HRE? Any other period images out there from the timeframe? Since my impression isn't the wealthy, images from 1255 on should be good, yes? I shall look into the Tailor's assistant...

13th Century Clothing Help

Well, due to financial....stuff....I need to go with an earlier, simpler period of clothing. Will be a while before I can afford to do my uber-spiff middle 16thC Saxon impression. Can't afford to buy those expensive clothes. My wife refuses to even attempt anything post 1300. So, I need to go with s...

OK, near any of the arm and leg armour patterns here on the archive will work. For joints, just use the patterns with the darts in them-the ones designed to be riveted. That will give you your curvature without a huge amount of trouble. Also try www.armorgeek.com. All his stuff is in leather. Includ...

I had never heard of the Cuzco school before. I didn't know there were any art forms like this that grew out of the new world in the 16th-17th centuries.

It's very beautiful. Methinks I must work on finding more of these...

Pee is pretty nasty, but it's sterile. Probably the ammonia that makes it so unpleasant. Good bleaching agent. It was also used in brewing. Added nutrients, which is helpful with meads. The nitrogen was the big thing, IIRC. Nowadays, we add powdered nutrient. I dunno what it comes from. Maybe from u...

Looking spiff, Greg. One day I'll actually understand the diagrams for the tied scabbards...lol. I suck at following knot diagrams.

4oz, really saturated with...neatsfoot? And how saturated? Still feels oily to the touch, or somewhat less than that?

Thanks!

So, I'd go and ask for a chrome tanned hide that looks like alum tawed? What do I say when they ask what alum tawed is?;)

If I go with hide, about what thickness am I looking at, and what type (garment, upholstery, etc)?

Thanks!

I may indeed have to ask him about that. Thanks. The 4 oz...it doesn't give you any trouble tying? Did you oil it yourself, or did you just buy bridle leather? Ok, I can see the wear about to blow out the eye holes for the tie on my current pair. I got them used, but I think they are Bohemond's Mary Rose model. Definitely looking for shoes first, boots later. Not so much looking for an identical pair. The leather is heinously thin. I've looked at Revival.u...

Another Thread SPurred on by 12th C Helm Thread...

So as not to hijack, here is the other thing I wanna ask about from that thread.

All the guys are shown with fingers. Artistic license? Fingered maille gaunts? Just bare handed and not showing a cuffline?

Not world changing, I guess, but I'm curious....

Tied Belts

Ok. Here's a question that's been bugging me a while. On belts like these: m (lifted from the 12thC Helm thread-didn't want to derail) What sort of leather is used for them? I'm sure veg can be, but I'd hate to tie that. On a Crusader at the Higgins years ago, there was a similar belt, 2 slits that ...

Trailers and Hitches on Minivans

Ok, this is not as OT as it sounds. I have a Mercury Villager. I want to get a trailer for it it because the inside cargo capacity sucks. Even worse with the seats in. It's tough to carry stuff to an event, and I don't even own my own lodgings for SCA camping yet. So, what do I need to know that I d...

I'm pretty sure people in period griped about heat too. Especially when Conquistadors started landing in the jungles and Mexican deserts. ;)

Is it possible that the imagery is of Carolingian Franks? Their iron hats can be misinterpreted as kettles. Or thought of as the forebear of the kettle if you want to reach a bit.

I'm not trying to re-invent anything. Just on days where the heat is hammering me worse than normal, something a bit cooler. The clothes from some eras are just inherently less hot by design. Less layers or looser or whatnot.

I think you're focusing too much on my heat comment.....
