Yeah, but some things are less hot than others. Cuts, how tight, how much material, even if its all linen make an impact. I mean, who'da thunk that wearing black baggy robes would help keep you cool in a desert and a wool, knee-length skirt would keep you warm in the cold damps of the highlands? But...

16thC Buttons
I'm looking for smallish brass buttons appropriate for a 16thC cassock. I can't tell you when or where precisely the cassock is representing, it was just an unfinished cast off given to me. I'm not gonna be too picky about which section of the century, or where. But I would like simple buttons. Not ...

The white undercoat should hide the red just fine. I'd still suggest plenty of layers of gold, tho. Aside from being able to take more abuse, it looks...goldier? with more layers. I gotta get a pic of the gold leather crowns I made.... Altho, if you don't undercoat with white, you may have a hint of...

How does a Person Deal With...
...Loving every period within the SCA time frame? Not even just one area, Lord no....I have to think that Avars are as fascinating as Saxons (both types!). I have to think that the armour the Franks wore is every bit as spiff as the stuff worn to the Holy Land, and just as spiff as a full-out Burgnd...

Re: Gambeson. . .
I don't know about you, but I don't know anyone else who is willing to shell out 1100 dollars for a gambeson! Gee, you ARE new here! Yeah, I would bet money there's a few anyones who would pay 1100 bones for a well made, thoroughly researched gambeson (I certainly would if I could spare it). You sh...

That blog page is made of win. That is precisely what I needed. There's even a couple of tent styles in the Charles V details I didn't know about. One's almost a reverse Baker tent. When is the Emperor's encampment at Grimlinghausen-Neuss? Very awesome. Very helpful in guiding my decision. Thanks! ...

Yep. But, were they used in the 16th century? Each century has things it did and didn't use from earlier ones. Just wondering if they were used in this particular time frame. Basically trying to find out if I should get one or if I need to weep and gnash my teeth with a wedge (small cheap one, not o...

Yet Another Tent Question-Wall Tents
Would a wall tent be accurate for a 16thC persona? I gotta ask, because I can procure decent ones at 80 and 126 sq feet for under $400 each. Need to get my own ground cloth tho. And, other than the St Max site (which is extremely killer, btw), where would I find images (loads of them, preferably), o...

I've read some accounts that say that Wahunsonacock (Chief Powhatan) sent a large warband to wipe out a tribe thought to be harboring the survivors. Well, integrating, more than harboring. Can't remember what part of NC it was, but it wasn't real near Roanoke I. Seems like the somewhere near the fal...

I've used the pockets technique....for want of any other practical way to do it...lol I just put a rubber band around the pocket. Obviously, it only works if you use the front pockets, but it went ok. I may actually just cut up old jeans and make a drawstring bag for future use. That way it's the de...

Thanks for the clarification on the rules. These aren't for Dag use, but if I ever make a Dag legal one, I'll know to go up to the next weight. That there is a historical precedent for this thrills me immensely. Especially in the Edwardian range. Silver leaf isn't dreadfully expensive. Especially if...

Awesome. I'm trying to figure out a way to set it up so I can repeatedly screw it down, and let the excess leather at the bottom have a place to go. That shade larger than the plug....I assume the approximate thickness of your leather? I'm afraid if I don't go at least that thick, I'll get a weird c...

At least Ridley Scott looks like he's seen some extant armour or period illustrations. KoH was way beyond any big production movie I've ever seen in terms of it's arms and armour. I admit, he cobbles together things from other centuries (Arab armours from later, and introducing certain European bits...

Trying to make a properly domed last is a bit intimidating for me at this point. I suck ass at that sort of work. One day I'm hoping to suck less, but getting the top working soon is a higher priority than my sculpting skills. And I really dig the flat top. I'm ok with there being visible stitching ...

For some reason, I didn't think of forming around a disc. Totally spaced on that. Thank you for reminding me of that option. Doing a slight dome would be easier? What sort of form would I use on that? I have only a tiny little dishing form, so I'm thinking that probably wouldn't cut it. On your 2-pi...

A Mac Bible Barrel Helm In Leather...Question
Ok, I'm going to start on one of these, like I said, in leather. It seems fairly straightforward. Only thing I'm really wondering about (for now), is putting the top on the barrel. I like the way it's done in the pic. Can I do that in leather with a single piece top? Can I fold it over smoothly, or ...

I'd just follow the fan suggestion myself. Leather never being totally uniform, you run a risk of a couple spots hardening up with the rest staying un-hardened. And I don't dye damp leather ever. Crappy results every time. Of course the new Eco-Flow dyes may do well on damp. I usually dye after hard...
