Lets face it. Are you really going to try and deflect a friggin huge bolt out of the way with your sword? Would it really do anything? Or are you going to dodge? The Knight in the above example was deflecting it to protect troops behind him. Several fighters warned him before he did it of the conseq...

Ballista bolt hit any part of you, or anything you control (shield/weapon/etc) you are dead.

Town battle at Pennsic 06 "Sir, you are dead. No, I deflected the bolt with my sword. Sir, the bolt hit your weapon, you are dead. But I caused it to hit my weapon! Your fault, Sir."

All of the guys I have talked with that do Dagohir/Amtguard (lumping them because I forget which, or both) all had a very head forward, lower shield stance. It was great at covering the lower leg, but didnt cover the head at all. They also wanted to know why lower leg shots were not legal. Showing t...

The other thing (and II references this slightly) is do you REALLY want to just stand there, and hope that horse, and all of his buddies behind him, don't ride right over you? I have heard some mention of fear playing a more important role in cavalry charges, as opposed to actually killing enough of...

Talbot's Shoe Patterns. Will run you about $10-15 (depending on the # of supplements you want). If you have any decent leatherworking experience, you can do these. I personally skip the nailed construction and sew the sole on, but that is because I don't have the tools or room for lasted construction.

I am about to start on some gauntlets out of the thickest portion of my hide that I can find (looks to be almost 18oz leather). That, on top of Ullieg/Duke Gavin's method (I personally use the Titebond method), has me fairly confident that they will turn out well. I have made several pairs of half g...

What I said is based of of ruminations, and other's observations. Sorry if I didn't make that clear.

That being said, I can remember seeing a whole lot of shirts with full sleeves and mufflers before about 1180. So maybe I should change the comment above to 11-12th?

Yeah, I am thinking more smaller lames would help fit more shoes better. Matt, dont worry about the height at the end. It is always easier to trim for smaller shoes, than to add back on.

Yes it is. It is designed so that when the arms hang down, they expand left/right, instead of up/down. It also more closely matches 12-13th illuminations.

Maybe I am confused, but has anyone actually bothered to write the Bavarian National Museum in Munich, and see why they dated it to when they did? That might give a bit more concrete evidence for the 1380-1400. Which is exactly what the tag says.

Not sure of your persona, but I fight in 12th century turnshoes, with leg wrappings, and they tend to function as a natural ankle brace. The shoes tie right above the ankle, and the leg wrappings along with space in the shoe prevent my ankle from twisting.

The two biggest things I see "wrong" with the pic: 1. The guy is on his back with his sword arm exposed. Not sure about others, but that don't look like the way I was taught to die. 2. The confused expressions on others faces, and looking down. Other than that, go for it. You can have grea...

If trying to replicate historical style, the biggest concern I see (besides length) is that the hood looks to close below your chin. This leads to a potential weak spot with your entire face being exposed. Try building up the bottom edge to where it comes to just below your lips, and if feeling real...

The wheel pommel is correct, but the curved quillions dont really start appearing in extant swords until around the mid 13th century. So, no, it wouldn't have been used at Hastings in 1066.

As others have said, passive vs. active seems to have less bearing than initially indicated. If a shot glances off the point of my Norman, or spears have a hard time sticking, isn't that passive? Or a hauberk that I wear picking up stray leg shots? There is a certain degree of active in there as wel...
