I have a decent amount of leatherworking experience, am a group YC marshall for Meridies, and live about an hour north of you (Midtown Atl.). Let me know if I can be of help with making or crafting things. Willing to travel a bit, or host armouring nights at my apt. Will also be at Fool's War. Depen...

I seriously hope your sizing is referring to head size, and not overall circumference. If so, depending on the price, I might be interested in one.

Most of that is the "premium" top grade stuff. Not sure what you produce, but the expensive stuff you see is supposedly flawless.

I don't think you are going to. Everyone's prices have gone up from wh...

Are the finger gauntlets in the background going to Chef as well?

Did you just cut the tooling design, or is there a height difference in the leather from tooling?

I believe you meant early to mid 13th century, as the Maciejowski Bible is dated to 1240-1260. Look at Goliath for a great big example.

Define high? I am looking at the site, and see that the Select Import Saddle Skirting is 89 a hide. There shouldn't be any brands, and few insect bites or ragged edges. I think that is a Feb. Sale price though, but normally they run about 110-120 with club pricing (IIRC).

I would develop a personal relationship with a Tandy or Leather Factory. Talk them through exactly what you want, and sometimes they "accidentally" put in the wrong amount when ringing you up. Had that happen several times now, and just smile and nod (when they put in units instead of sq. ...

Technically, there cannot be metal on a "striking surface". As long as it is not marked as an "edge" it is legal.

I got 100% cotton batting at Jo-Anns, Michael's or some other craft place. You definately want pure cotton over any poly blend. My gambeson is three years old and going strong.

So flipping it around, what evidence do you have for wearing the deer/pig skin under maille? Not being snide, generally interested. Was this based on extant research, or simply interpretive trial archeology?

Gotcha. What I was referring to seems to be an earlier style (possibly either converting Normans, or referencing that style when these started to become popular).

Looks good. The only suggestion I would make (and I can't tell from the photo) would be to put a kind of crease down the center of the dome (akin to a Norman helm). Helps give it some definition.

Looks real nice. For the next one, you might want to put just a bit mroe fo a downward curve to the brim. Also, I would say try to get some of the cool fluting on the band (aka. Mac Bible). Overall looks great.

Sean, if you can find the old "How to make the Maciejowski Chopper" tutorial, their sword is constructed the same way. Split the rattan, block out the inside for support, and then tape the hell out of it.

When working on the poles for our Norman, we found that using 1 5/8" diam. closet rods worked well, after sanding the ends to fit into 1 1/2" aluminum conduit. The "shoulder" of the unshaved section helped to keep the join where it belonged.

On an opposing note, would the saddles that you and Chef are mentioning be used during this era? Would de Joinville have recognized these as being important? I ask this becuase the saddle may have become more important as the armour protected better, thus leading to other ways of incorporating force...

Uh, I believe you just defined "Laminated Construction". As the thing that is expressly banned in the rules. Now taking a normal piece of rattan, splitting and reinforcing the center, and then taping seems to be allowed. Just no Rattan on Rattan action.
