Hey Owynn, Master Geoffrey has had life catch up with him. I do know someone who has some of them laying around for sale. What size do you need, and I will see if I can hook you up with one.

Glue or sew canvas over them. Then it looks a lot less period. Sounds like a good idea. I would add diving weight belts for body shots.

SO, what I am getting out of your last post, is that you are making 16ga. 1/4" Inner Diameter Butted Rings (pushing the ends together), and you want to make it like the picture? I have seen the gloves Steve has made, and I agree with the thinking behind a slit across your wrist (not how your fingers...

AFAIK, If you let them know that they are being subcontracted, and you are going to use their part, usually they shouldnt have a problem. I would check with them, and see what they say.

400 is an excellent price for a helm like this. I already have a great Norman, and dont know anyone else around here that does that timeperiod (unfortunately). I would hold out just a bit at that price range, all it will take is the right person seeing it, and they will be all over it.

Sometimes things just come together, or that spot has been rusted over time, etc. Sean has a 10 ga. one that looks like tinfoil now, but has seen over 15 years of service.

You might want to list a relative price, or range you are interested in. It is a beatiful helm, and looks great for a mid-level Crusader persona (mid to late 12th century, unless I completely miss my guess?) The gilding kind of gives it a bit of extra bling.

Though the aventail insnt long enough, and has a ragged patch line down the front from trimming it (and its butted), I think I, as well as several others, have done a great job. We usually leave about 2-3 bars visible, as that is where the nasal ends.

From five feet away (or the other side of a shieldwall), no one would really notice. The only reason they caught my eye was the stitching, and slightly shinier aspect of it. Wasnt sure if you were planning on leaving it that way, but it just seemed silly considering the amount of work you put into t...

I would suggest taking a bit more of the black leather, and covering the toes. No reason to leave that part uncovered, and if you extend them just a bit, you can get a pointy turnshoe look.

That seems to be a pretty good size. Most of the stuff I have seen (from Byzantine more, but still) covers from your shoulders to your crotch, and shoulder to shoulder (at the ends of the shield).

Couple of things to get a better idea of your skill set. Have you ever riveted anything, or peened rivets? How about sewing? From what I have heard, making a liner should only take a couple of hours, and maybe another hour to install.

Most of the stuff I have seen is a bit later than Viking as well. I focus more on the late 11th-12th century stuff, so I tend to lean a bit more into Byzantine instead of Viking. There was one Egfroth posted which had three people, with shields wrapping around their body, and clearly showed what I w...

Most of the carvings/illuminations I have seen show a pretty big curve to them (at least 3"). This also helps bring the center of balance behind the wood in the center to a point in space, which either your hand or elbow (strapped/centergrip) could occupy. The top just comes from looking at several ...

The hardest part about kites is that people dont realize that the top isnt a straight circle, when looking at effigies. Most of the time, it was more oval-oid. That, and no one seems to make the curve deep enough.

Either will work pretty well. Are you better with a needle or a ball pein? Depending on the leather, you might need to punch the leather as well, for riveting or sewing.

If you want a 3d look, I would crease them down the center. It will make them stronger as well.

Just an FYI, you might want to check with a local rabbi, if you are planning on using this for any (Jewish) religious reasons. I am pretty sure there are some kosher laws coming into conflict (mostly with killing the animal humanely), and there might be rules on carving/polishing.

I dont think he has to worry about it failing anytime soon due to excessive use, due to the fact it hasnt taken much abuse.
