1) No archer, honorable or not should ever shoot you in the back. but they do, and continue to do so, even though I hear MANY CAers say they shouldn't. So, you are damning all CA because of the actions of a few? By that reasoning, you shouldnt be fighting heavy, because people Rhino "even though I ...

Never been to Gulf Wars and the Ravine battle have you? Never seen CAers with garbage cans as quivers strapped to their hips? Yes, I have. I have seen people with giant bags of arrows, not quite literally garbage cans, but close. But part of the problem is that a period quiver could have held sever...

Part of the quivers the size of garbage cans is a result of the SCA rules. Real archers had supply lines, and were routinely required to carry multiple quivers, adding up to over 200 arrows (Mongol archers). The other thing is that most true arrows can fit quite a bit more into a quiver vs. the SCA ...

I actually fall into the same category as James (with regards to its appropriateness to SCA combat) but am interested in learning how effective it was with regards to its historical useage (especially when it is about my period). I would agree that we try and keep this regelated to historical useage...

To kill our invisible horses? To clarify Sir, I understand there were other reasons for shooting, besides trying to kill your opponent. I just was playing devil's advocate, in hopes that someone who doesnt know might learn more by your answer. I had a feeling if I hadnt asked, someone else would hav...

And since people assume the only *possible* reason you'd shoot hordes of arrows at your foe is because you expected to kill a lot of them, this seems logical. But when you go back to the primary-source material, you see that the chronicler noted that the reason the arrows were so effective is that ...

We have two newbies around here. One is Edric the Bastard, who seems to be "obsessed" about his kit, and trying to get the best period fit while still doing a 13th century persona. Getting better, and has dedication. Another guy hasnt gotten an SCA name, but comes out, throws on armour, and keeps fi...

Thanks for the quotes. Somehow it seems that some people who keep advocating the "Plate as Proof" rule seem to ignore/forget that maille was also quite effective against arrows for a long period of history. Thanks for the face caveat though. I have heard speculation that one of the reasons that vent...

I think the problem is that even using the light swords, people are "supposedly" feeling thunk. I would try switching to some really light rattan, Tor. Even if it slightly heavier, I prefer getting hit with it compared to siloflex. Yes, it does feel different (especially when you compare min. diamet...

Sir Rhys, I know your focus is later periods, but do you have, or know of, any data done on maille and tunics/gambesons such as would be worn during the beginnings of the Crusades/Conquest era? I have heard varying reports of how sucessful archery was (both by the Franks and Saracens), and figured t...

Tor, you hit just fine down here. I have only fought here, and you dont seem to be clubbing people. A lot of what you have heard down here has to do with where you are living (and the politics around that), and I can bet you a beer I know which knight mentioned it. He swings as hard as you do. Just ...

Zinc plus ?(vinegar?) equals something bonded to zinc and hydrogen? So in other words, dont light a match? What exactly is the "remainders"? I am drawing some of this off Freshman Chem. (several years ago), so I am a bit rusty. I figured that someone out here would have done it, and either would say...

I had heard (and this is Hearsay ) that there were still fumes produced when using vinegar to strip the galvanization, but the fumes were not as concentrated. That was what the bubbles coming out of the vinegar are. (I have never used vinegar to strip galvanization, but have heard of this "fact" sec...

I actually made a pair of demi-gauntlets that were sewn into welding gloves. Fit wonderfully, and no one realizes that they arent gloves. I just got a pair of Crash-pads shorts to wear under my gambeson, to take more of the sting off. Start looking into low-profile sports armour, that covers what is...

Low profile leather demi-gauntlets. If you really want to hit the primo-hand defense while still looking like you are in period, check out Jiri Klepac's thread about his gauntlets. I would go with either sport armour/plastic, or leather. These have the advantages of usually being designed to go unde...

I had a coif from Von Sussen (butted, not riveted). It will need some extensive work to get it close to fitting most people. His tend to be an expansion start, and then a straight tube down, and then another expansion at the bottom. If you are looking for a close fitted coif, I would go with a custo...

Sabatons? Do you really need to have leather sabatons for a Visigoth? I would look into what they wore, and then wear that. If it is not enough, hide the rest of the armour. Some people will look bad, others will look amazing. Just keep trying to get more historical, and you will help improve the lo...
