Dude, that was meant as a joke. Only got a nice bruise from it, and the helm did what it was historically designed to do (channel swords from my head). You hit just a bit harder, mostly since it is hard to stop that much mass. Hope you can still make it out, it has been fun seeing you around (and ma...

Part of the reason I like Oldcastle is that by positioning my body the way I do, I have to generate power, unless I want to keep my body at a extremely wierd angle. Part of your problem may be your footwork, and how your feet are positioned. Oldcastle forces you to keep your feet at a wierd angle, t...

Not sure if I qualify as lacking in mass (I am skinny, but 6'5"), I use something quite similar to an Oldcastle guard. With a heater, what really helps for me is to look over the top of the shield, instead of around the point. The point should be at about 2 o'clock, and the shield should be pointing...

Adam, the next time you go, can you get some closer pictures of the "Jousting Hun" (DSCI0148)? It looks like he is wearing lamellar or scale underneath the hauberk from this angle. Also a closeup of the belt fittings in thegGrave effigy of Wiprecht von Groitzsch, and what is on his hand (holding the...

I would go in to your eye care professional, explain exactly what we do (bring in a sword), explain you can get hit in the head with THIS, and then have him talk you through your options. Alternatively, see if you are a candidate for eye correction surgery. Depending on what period you are, you migh...

Sport Glasses. Enough said. I would suggest something that can sit farther away from your face, so you have room. Audax, I know several people who wear prescription glasses inside their helm, and havent had a problem. The glasses they wear tend to look like raquetball goggles, with prescription lens...

By that reasoning, I should have demi-gauntlets on both hands, instead of simply my sword hand. My shield basket, and my shield do a fair job of covering my wrist, and the basket makes it a pain for me to use a demi, but if I lose an arm, I should yield? You are already having to wait a second for m...

Not in the bayeaux tapestry, unless I completely missed something. Far too early for them to start showing up. I think the Mac Bible has a couple, but they have already started to become second rate by that time. From what I can remember (sorry, forget the sources), they started to show up around th...

This spear is the only thing I have ever seen, when firmly stuck into a target, that would hit the ground. Everything else has managed to stay up. The way the rule is worded, the intent seems to be that it has to be a good "stick" and not be wobbly, and fall out before they score it. I know archery ...

The easiest thing for you to do, Mike: Tear it down completely and rebuild it. The reason it is getting a cluttered look to it, is due to you slowly adding stuff as you made it. I would say a bit of color, slightly subdued on the front page, and take out the pics at the bottom. They make it hard to ...

Not on that helm. Realistically, anything past about 2" from the top, isnt neccessary. I fight in a Norman with maille across the bottom half, and dont even realize it is there (except when trying to get a drink). Easy way to tell: Take your hand, put it on the tip of your nose, holding it parallel ...

No tabard, really. The first instances that heraldry start showing up is in the latest parts of the 12th century, and then only for the high-and-mighty. I would wear a gambeson, or other form of padded protection under the maille, if only for impact protection. Maille is kind of like medieval kevlar...

To Clarify: It was a stupid idea. He wasnt trying to catch it in flight, but after it hit, and stuck into the target, there was about 3sec. where the target started to do a slow faceplant, and the butt of the spear hit the ground. For Thrown Weapons competitions (SCA), if the weapon hits the ground ...

Remember, when throwing at wooden targets, they are boomerangs. One of my friends earned the nickname of Mikhael the Spear-Biter for that reason. Throwing from 35 ft, and tries to get there fast enough to catch the end before the weight of the spear makes the target tip forward (no point if it hits ...

Hey Otto, an idea for your Crusader helm. You might want to consider adding an option where you add a strip of leather that is sandwitched between the top and back plates, and extends just under the lip of the top of the plate. This would allow people to add a drape to the bottom, hiding the SCA par...

I would look for ways to prevent the legs from rotating on them. Have them put it on, and see what stops them from moving. Try holding them against the greave, holding the cuisse tight, etc. I think I had a similar problem to what Rhyance is describing. I started fighting in 14ga. 3/4 legs, and left...

Second tournament I fought in. It was raining, so the marshalls decided to hold it in the hall. All of the fighters were in armour, defining the "field" and protecting the populace. It is not only the Chatelaine. I dont think our current shire has one () but we have come close to doubling our members in the past year. Good Luck at CW, Red Hand. I will try to stop by if I get a minute, and see how you are doing. You will get lots of people there who will stop by and look at all sorts of things. I would seriously consider renaming your SCA coif, as I know a couple of people who actually wear coifs under their helm....

Hey Infinity, I live in Meridies. Didnt realize we had the toughest standards, but we are pretty safety concious down here. Here is the EM's email (earl.marshall@meridies.org), so you can send him a sketch/idea of what you have, and he could look at it.
