Dude, that was meant as a joke. Only got a nice bruise from it, and the helm did what it was historically designed to do (channel swords from my head). You hit just a bit harder, mostly since it is hard to stop that much mass. Hope you can still make it out, it has been fun seeing you around (and ma...

Part of the reason I like Oldcastle is that by positioning my body the way I do, I have to generate power, unless I want to keep my body at a extremely wierd angle. Part of your problem may be your footwork, and how your feet are positioned. Oldcastle forces you to keep your feet at a wierd angle, t...

Not sure if I qualify as lacking in mass (I am skinny, but 6'5"), I use something quite similar to an Oldcastle guard. With a heater, what really helps for me is to look over the top of the shield, instead of around the point. The point should be at about 2 o'clock, and the shield should be pointing...

Audax, I know several people who wear prescription glasses inside their helm, and havent had a problem. The glasses they wear tend to look like raquetball goggles, with prescription lens...

By that reasoning, I should have demi-gauntlets on both hands, instead of simply my sword hand. My shield basket, and my shield do a fair job of covering my wrist, and the basket makes it a pain for me to use a demi, but if I lose an arm, I should yield? This spear is the only thing I have ever seen, when firmly stuck into a target, that would hit the ground. Everything else has managed to stay up. The way the rule is worded, the intent seems to be that it has to be a good "stick" and not be wobbly, and fall out before they score it. I know archery ...

Totenkopf literally translates to Death-Head, which is a unit of the Nazi party. That is why you are getting that association. I would call it a Crusader face-helm, as the last part tends to distinguish it from the greathelms and then Normans.

The easiest thing for you to do, Mike: Tear it down completely and rebuild it. The reason it is getting a cluttered look to it, is due to you slowly adding stuff as you made it. Not on that helm. Realistically, anything past about 2" from the top, isnt neccessary. Easy way to tell: Take your hand, put it on the tip of your nose, holding it parallel ...

One trick for designing full arms is to make them slightly bent to begin with, so that there is a bit of extra maille on the inside of the elbow. Stops it from bunching quite as much.

He wasnt trying to catch it in flight, but after it hit, and stuck into the target, there was about 3sec. where the target started to do a slow faceplant, and the butt of the spear hit the ground. For Thrown Weapons competitions (SCA), if the weapon hits the ground ...

Matt, they have actually done some tests (including Mythbusters) and seem to have found, the level it hacks off your toes, pretty much ruins your feet no matter what you are wearing. If something hits it hard enough to bend it down, your foot is in trouble.

Ok, I am an idiot. I was wondering where you all were getting 3/8" bars (because it seemed overkill to me), until I searched the post. I meant 3/16" in the first post, and the same 1/8" if the rivets are close enough together. Sorry about the confusion.

The other thing to do is once the plate covering the back of your hand is closer to the "arm" plate, use thinner leather for the section in between. If they are almost butting, this will allow them to be attached, but increase the range of motion.

Hey Otto, an idea for your Crusader helm. You might want to consider adding an option where you add a strip of leather that is sandwitched between the top and back plates, and extends just under the lip of the top of the plate. This would allow people to add a drape to the bottom, hiding the SCA par...
