If you need a power drill, why not work with the article from MAIL, and put a cutting disk on a powertool? Runs through several hundred at a time, a good deal faster. The only difference is the price of cutting blades (not sure how fast they wear out). Not sure if the speed difference is worth the p...

SCA or LH style (aka, does it need a grill, back and cheek plates, or do you just want the actual helm they would have used)?

It looks to be a bolt cutter that has had the blades ground, has a foot pedal to snip them, and a way to feed coils in. I would modify the way the coils went in, because of droopage (such as in the picture). What do I win?

Maybe I am reading it wrong, but you are describing grills like what Zweihammer has for his Valasgarde kit, right? In that case, I dont see how the Bars section that is quoted could be relevant, as they are no different than the rest of the helm, such as a slatback.

Where are you seeing 1/4"? The stuff in Meridies requires 3/16" BARS, but makes no mention of strips of metal. You could make the grill out of 16ga. if you wanted to, as that is the only requirement I could see pertaining to a sheet steel grill (as opposed to a bargrill). Edited cause I am an idiot,...

After looking in the Meridian Marshall's Handbook, I have to apologize. I could not find anything that disallowed striking surfaces on both padded and unpadded parts of a weapon. I commented earlier in the thread that I thought it was illegal, but it must have been hearsay. I am sorry for any confus...

Ebay Book Find

Hey, I was trolling around Ebay a couple of days ago, and found this up. No bids except for me, the whole time. Pretty good deal, considering I have only seen it sell for around 100 dollars at events, so 26.50 is a pretty good price. Been meaning to pick this up eventually, but not this soon. Here i...

I think that people are missing a crucial point here. The teacher was very receptive, and willing to be open to another idea, other than the curicullum (sp?). It seems to be rarer today to find people who are willing to have "students" question things they know are "right".

I got the 5.3 stuff for both inner and outer layers. Seems to be pretty sturdy, without turning into canvas. I would suggest ordering a lot when you get it, as shipping seems to start at 7-8 dollars, and then stay there for the next 20-30yards or so.

I would also wonder about the replacing of the rope. Part of it is that it is a constant reminder, and the reminder doesnt change. I would agree with Sir Vitus, about a chain.

How are you able to mark both sides as striking areas? I was under the assumption that either the entire striking edge had to be padded, or none of the striking edge could be.

Belt Mounts

I am looking to dress up a belt I have, and was wondering how far apart the belt mounts are usually spaced. I am doing a Crusader period, but simply adding the mounts for visual effect, as I havent seen any indication it was done in period. Thanks.

Chances are, Mad Celt (the jumping one) is smiling. When he first started fighting, he had a really angry-looking face when he concentrated. People started to get concerned that he was actually mad, so he started smiling. Now he has a smirk-like smile, that just makes it that much more annoying that...

Knowing someone who fights with a strapped round shield on his arm, it seems to work ok for melees. He has two straps on it, and one of them sits in his hand the entire time. When he is holding his spear, it is armour. If he is just holding the shield, it is a shield (passive shield rule). He really...

You could...but the shield counts as armour. So not terribly useful, unless you want the "looking cool" factor. I would imagine the throwing of a shield in combat wouldnt be looked to fairly on, but if you come in with it pre-mounted to your back, sure. I would suggest going with a sword and axe, or...
