All you really need is a ball pein hammer, 2 roofing nails, two pennies, and a ball hitch (for a trailer), and a drill. Managed to install one during a practice last night, and still make it out to fight.

Hey Jester, what sources do you have regarding half-swording or grabbing opponents blades, pre-14th century? I would have thought they did not need it as a dedicated style due to the inefficiency of armour vs swords (maille does a lot less than plate, but is better than nothing).

If you had a linen liner, you could always sew the ends of the straps on. Just make sure they are exactly where you want it, and add a ton of stitching to make sure it stays. I just eventually broke down and added two holes to my helm (and got it wrong, so now it has two extra empty holes.

Just making sure, you do have two pieces cut out like this right? If not, you do know you will need two? Just wanting to make sure that you dont get half a helm done and then wonder what you did wrong.

I thought all places were going to fiberglass shafted CA shafts. The wood ones were getting phased out on an SCA level, or so I heard. Is this completely wrong?

Sorry Jean-Michael, I was going off of what I heard from fencers who were directly there (household incident, but not in said household). Apparantly, they were able to reconcile but not the rapier community as a whole. Apologies for passing on any other misinformation.

And our swords don't look like sword. Our swords may not look like a sword exactly, but they do not get confused with other types of weapons based on their shape either. That's because we've all been trained that "this is a representation of a sword". Not because they look anything like a real broa...

Because it is fun. I put on armour for the first time, got hit, and absolutely loved every minute of it. I fight for the honor of my lady, for the comraderie, and the dreams I had as a kid. I fight because it allows me to release all of the stress I have built up. I stop caring about anything that i...

Guys, this has been discussed In Kingdom to great length, and a lot of rumors have been spread around about this. Most of the stuff being heard is directly untrue. I would suggest taht unless you heard it directly from someone who was there for "x incident" (which there are really no incidents), ple...

Grimstone, I was not in any way trying to imply that LH groups were exclusive. I am sorry if it might have came across that way. I am doing a 12th century Crusader, and have gotten to the point where I think I might be able to participate. I believe the particular problem for me is not that any LH g...

Just noticed, is there a band of engraved (I would assume brass) around his helm? Can anyone make out the motif, or words? Is this normal, or a "unique" thing to this effigy?

Edited: Which Statue of Roland is this? I keep getting the Bremen one with the giant COA of Germany on it when I search.

Let me check tonight. I have three kids (in my shire) who are about to start YC and $25 is even cheaper than a hockey helmet (and looks better). Just a reminder, Wikipedia can be edited by anyone. We might want to find a couple of other sources. This could (unlikely) be the work of one imaginative individual. I am not meant to imply this is a fraud, just a friendly reminder about Wikipedia.

Grimstone, maybe I have a misinformed idea of the cost of LH as apposed to SCA. One of the reasons I enjoyed getting into the SCA is that the minimum standards happen to be fairly low. This meant I was able to "get in the door" at the beginning at a low cost to me. This was fairly important, as I wa...
