OK, then show me some European leather armor remnants. There aren't any. You can only use examples from what exists. Widespread leather armor should have more prescence. Shoes are in every midden in Europe, for example. I still claim faulty logic. Just because one culture used something one way, do...

Since we cant really tell from the photo, what are you doing about buckles? Belt, shoes, belt tip, etc are all ways to subtly bring out the look you are going for. Another way to up the ante (albeit more expensive) is to look into alternatives other than the normal brass options people list. There a...

It is ridiculously easy to over-saturate leather with black dye. The upside is that it is fairly easy to get a consistent color across the belt. Just take a rag of some kind and buff the daylights out of it to make sure you get up all the dye. Also, wear gloves. Leather and skin are pretty much alik...

In short if you want to get into an argument over what is acceptable via the letter of the law even though its presents a clear danger to fellow participants that's an individuals prerogative. Its just not mine. If I met a person on the field with such a helmet I would happily walk off. I do not re...

Note that if you remove (ie: destroy) a working treadle sewing machine to make such a grinder, I will curse the work it touches to the thirteenth generation of projects! I agree. Up here on Craigslist though, I see tons of non-working machines as well as just the tables for sale all the time. The o...

Also, 16ga would work fine for someone who is still youth fighting in the SCA. IIRC, their minimums are about 18ga or so, so this would be perfectly fine. From a business perspective, think of your timing. The economy ain't so great, and lots of people just dropped serious cash for the holidays. Kin...

It all depends on your level of pain. Like the above posters, I am also going the High Middle Ages route, and currently wear motocross knees (will look at the brand later), Crashpads shorts, a kidney belt and generic lacrosse elbows, with a thick gambeson overtop it all. If you have the money, I hav...

I understand I was going to make the bottom one but after looking at it I found out it would be to heavy. And the other one in the top image was going to cost way to much for me to do and I don't have all the tools to do it. Actually, if you dropped the maille underneath the lamellar, it wouldn't w...

In my case, I can usually judge if it was flat by how my hand feels and is oriented when I feel the impact. I know one guy who taped his swords to be in-line with his first knuckle, because of how he threw shots, and it made it easier for him to judge. In the end, it all comes back to the honor syst...

Why are you bothering with scale, or lamellar or other things that you know aren't historical for you? Just get one of those body bracelets from O'Quinn, and a good stiff gambeson. Rely on your virtue (*cough*) and your big mucking shield to carry you through, and then at least the pain will be from...

Pay for your materials. This one is usually difficult to achieve since unless someone used something expensive I tell them not to worry about it. At least offer to pay the person for the materials. Whether or not they choose to charge you is up to them, but you are using things that they paid for. ...
