Yes and if we allow face thrusts we are all going to get our neck broken.... SCApussification. No, there is a big difference between the two. Know someone who had to undergo 2 different surgeries, simply because a blow went low as he was stepping. Not sure what you don't understand about that part,...

I have also heard, and understand the safety issue. Do we really want someone swinging for shins with a polearm, against a charging unit? Sounds like a recipe for lots of twisted ankles, etc.

Wow. We grapple all the time and it leads to no significant number of injuries. Dunno what you're afraid of. How much training do you give "dogs" (I think that is the right term) before letting them free spar in melee? I think that may have something to do with it, and the degree of trust...

For people looking to go the low-profile look, does the elbow still cover enough without the rondel attached , or do you need it for the added protection?

Probably more of a kit question, as well as varying from person to person. Just checking.

The pictures I have/had of pavises in the Bavarian National Museum showed a similar construction. One was even cracked along the "seam" between the upper and lower board.

Maybe "flying" was a bad word. Try flopping. I haven't seen one fail spectacularly (though seeing exposed ones just hits a bad nerve with me), and most people I know don't tend to break the "tape rope" any faster. Just putting it out there as another alternative, and one you can ...

Duct tape rope. Take a large piece of duct tape, twirl one end until it is all exposed sticky, and then wrap tightly. You can feel it failing far before a hose clamp, lasts at least as long, and doesn't have a piece of flying metal when it fails.

What timeperiod exactly? 1100AD? The "first" few Crusaders landed in 1096 (right after Peter the Hermit's, who pretty much all died), IIRC (all of my books are packed as well), so you are looking at ~4yrs. "in culture" to adopt. I would go with "not unheard of" but defi...

As I understand it, Tuchux operate under a different but similar ruleset to the SCA. Therefore being "authorized in X weapon in the SCA" doesn't matter.

Maybe a quick coat of metallic spraypaint on the inside, before covering with leather? Just trying to think of a quick and easy way to hide the inside when you aren't wearing them, that would hold up to a 5ft. rule. I think that what Effingham was getting at was that adding a seam along the brow (like Duke Phelan's) would have at least distinguished between the parts that were historical (everything above the brow and possibly faceplate) and the back/wrap plate.

The part going around your helm itself needs to be roughly rectangular or cylindrical. After that, it expands into a cone, such as Audax is describing. There are multiple ways of doing so. One is to add expansion links every so often, or you could add multiple triangles and fill in the spaces in bet...

Yeah, but add a pollen count of over 1000, and you have Meridies. Extreme tops out at like 300. And 100% humidity. And we still don't fight indoors.
