I was taught that the body mechanics for a woman to throw a good blow were slightly different than a man, owing to differing physiology. Therefore it is useful to have women teach women, at least in certain basic areas. Unless I am mistaken, as I surely am no biologist. I do not agree with this at ...

Actually, just judging by what I have had happen to me, you would. I fought in the WoH in concealed plastic, and steel-toed boots (since changed the boots). It requires you look historical from 10yds, so concealed plastic, machine stitching etc. still counts. This was a few years ago though, so thin...

I have one made like that I can show you, Tor. Pretty easy to make. For some reason, even using two layers of neoprene stuff, they still came out too stiff. Maybe I taped them too tight. Few jabs with a pocket-knife, and they are perfect.

Re-reading my post, I can certainly see where you can see the distinction, Carlyle. Such was not my intention. More to the point that people look up to high quality kits, and the Mafia have them in droves. My point was that the way I read Audax's suggestion was the same as people helping along other...

I am still wondering the point of asking in the first place. If you have a problem with someone, ask them about it. If you don't like the answer, either deal with it, or ask another opinion. So really what you are debating is in fact Cut/Thrust, and not fencing at all. So why bring that part of the equation into it? You can't force anyone to look a specific part. I know in Meridies, rigid helm protection is required, as well as elbows, knees and demi-gauntlets. Everything else is fencin...

How far apart should the stitches be? Could I attack the 'prongs' with a file and round out the points some? Shape them to points instead of a chisel shaped end? That is essentially what I did. Still left them "prong" shaped, but might work to round them out. I also have the 3 pronged one...

The prong thingy also tends to work better for thicker leathers. I have thinned down each of the "arms", and it is a great way to go through 6-7oz and up. When saddle stitching correctly, it is almost impossible to notice I used one of these.

And either way, make sure you have some way to help hold the piece up. No matter which way you use, the leather will go limp, and those are just too nice to "flop".

What was the temperature you were drying the jacks at?

I remember somewhere reading that the crucial temperature being at least 160 deg. to 212deg. (where the water inside the leather starts to boil, and bad things happen). Maybe you didn't get yours hot enough?

How tight is the maille currently? How far down your arm does it extend? For most of the period wearing maille, full arms are not that period. You really only see them starting in the last bit of the 12th century through maybe the late 13th to early 14th (guessing on the end period). If you can't ge...

Sorry for the mis-understanding. I have also heard of the below referred to as "water" hardening, as you are immersing it in water first. By casing the leather in room temprature water, shaping it through burnishing or dishing, (even nailing it to lasts will work), and then baking it dry i...

Maybe it is just me, but I have heard of "water hardening" being described as the soak in room temp. water, and then bake. This is instead of "Boiling water method", "baking method" and all of the other terms people have come up with.

If you get them direct, you should have no problem returning them if they don't really cover what you want. Looked into their "chest" protector, which barely covered past my sternum. Sent them an email, and paid a small shipping fee to return it, and they refunded my money pretty quick.
