Scuba Diving. If you can find a local place, which will let you get into a pool with gear on, just practice 4 in, 6 out. If you end up gasping for air, stand up, and take out the regulator. That may have the "I am underwater, don't gasp" mentality built in, and help you get around the coun...

Hal, I wonder if you continued the flutes farther down the helm, almost to the point where they touched the brow. Then using something like a dishing hammer, you could get the "relief" shown in the photo, without having a specialized stake.

Kind of. Starting to get into this whole metal pounding thing (been working with leather previously). I understand the working rate vs. your time in something. But if you love making helms, Hal, just make them for the love of making them. Then sell them off, and if you cover your material costs, and only work on them when you enjoy it, you come out ahead. And we can still see these wonderful creatio...

So all of you that are using anvils (both hot and cold working), how much of a difference does it make to have a real anvil vs. an ASO? If the latter is all you can afford now, will it still lend itself towards basic techniques?

I agree that the cut is far more likely to cause any significant damage. Just felt like I had to at least acknowledge the other side of the coin, after starting the thread, and getting "some" references.

Apparently, there is some limited evidence to support Alex's claim of thrusting being used during the High Middle Ages, against people in maille. Not much (like on the level of justifying Norse two-weapon fighting), but there is some.

A thread I started on MyArmoury about this

There is limited evidence for side slits.

The main reason (IMO) is because when it is slit in the front, even without any gores in the bottom, my legs are still covered. Slits on the side tend to expose the leg, even during a walking motion.

Sounds correct, except the slit up the back (unless you mean just for your legs to move).

The only place I know of doing accurate 12th century gambesons is Matuls.pl, but with the US=EU conversion, they are a bit pricy.

But the madu (by itself, not counting other one handed thrusting weapons) has been shown to be contrary to the incorporating documents of the SCA. No, because even forceful thrusts to the body are a safety measure, compared to the force levels of actual thrusts from swords. Therefore, all such thrusts are cheesy in general, and weapons designed exclusively to take advantage of this (Madu, Christian Greatsword, etc) are the same level of cheesy...
