Well smoking has been medically proven to kill people. Fencing may be felt unsafe by someone, but what injuries have occured fencing? Second, by his own statement: "I do not fence. I do not enjoy watching fencing." He then says he has issues on safety. Saying I have safety issues with fencing, and w...

Irish, I think what some people have issue with is not that he personally dislikes fencing. The issue is that he is King of Meridies. Meredies has legal fencing. He has outwardly chosen not to entertain a certain portion of his populace. Good kings look to the good of their populace, not just the pa...

Thanks Magnus! Draco, I did not use a pattern. I basically used a rectangle of leather. About as wide as the top of the boot down to where I sewed it by the sole. The length was from the base of the laces on one side, wrapping around the back to the base of the laces on the other side. Hope that is ...

Going by the picture of you on your knees with your back facing the camera I'd say the breastplate is part of your problem. If it is compressing the lower ribs, you are decreasing the total volume of air that you take in. When not fighting it is probably not noticable, but once you start exerting yo...

If there are thicker pieces, you could make half gauntlets, gorgets, bottles, shoe soles, etc.

Faux-fighting boot

I have a weak ankle that I would not want to risk in turnshoes, plus down in swamp town we have a lot of slick, damp grass. I took a good pair of boots and wrapped them with leather. Trimmed it with thinner leather and put a few buttons. It is not overly period, but from a distance it is better than...

No. There is foam under the leather, but it is all stitched to the outside of the glove.

Hard to see in this picture, but the thump piece is shaped like a P. The narrow endcurves to the inside.

Back to the topic. :D

Here is a pic of my half guantlet, done with a pattern Sir Camric showed me.

The leather is stitched to the outside of the glove and dyed to match, so it is low profile.

Works really good and covers the base of the thumb well.

So in Atlantia, what happens if you lose your sword arm in a tourney? How do you fight with your off hand if you are not wearing an elbow cop on your shield arm?

Curious, as I thought this was a Society wide standard as well.

For those that have done SCA fighting in a kettle helm, does that brim catch a lot of shots? I'm used to a tight conical that promotes glancing shots, and a kettle looks like it would catch everything. Just curious.

Really nice work though. :D

You have a SERIOUS injury that could leave you PERMANENTLY crippled if you continue to put it through a rigerous/strenuous activity. Listen to your surgeon and follow his rules regarding treatment AND rehab. You have your best chance of a good recovery when you do everything by the book. Anyone who ...

Welded is strongest, followed by riveted, then butted. (generally) Butted is cheapest, then riveted, with welded most expensive. If you are going to invest, I'd go welded over rivited, unless you are very concerned about the mail being authentic. The welded looks like riveted from a few feet away, s...

Funny you say that Audax. When I fought in lamellar I used a pair of baseball sliding shorts I had put thicker padding in. When I first switch to maille, the form hugging look made those pads make my ass look big. I had a rough decision: vanity over protection. Hmmm, being a pretty boy, I got rid of...

Poor new fighter attitudes!

"Time to get my ass kicked", "time to die", even "I just enjoy having fun because I know I'll never be a good fighter". In my 11 years of fighting, I have heard a lot of variations on these comments, and they bug me. Even as a new fighter, I was always jokingly telling my teachers "ready to die?". M...

Audax, search for Crashpads on the net. Basically high grade biking shorts with good padding sewn in. I wear it under mine and takes a good bit of impact. Still stings a touch but lessens the bruises.
