I personally do not want anything on the field that does not hit with authority and leaves no doubt you are dead. So my vote is no.

Chris, do you find the luan holds up better than 2 1/4" pieces of other wood?
Is there much weight difference? How long does your standard luan shield hold up to abuse, and what are you rimming it with?

Women have "gained" the right just like anybody else. They persevered. They put their time in. Some suffered more than others, but that is simply the way of life. Me, I fight everyone the same - with respect. Even if you are a dick head, I only bring dishonor to myself if I don't. Uric

I use 3-4oz leather and a 1.5" dowel to form it over. I used fence post caps to make a throat & chape. http://i119.photobucket.com/albums/o140/monkeybite/100_4456.jpg For my secondary, also 3-4oz leather. http://i119.photobucket.com/albums/o140/monkeybite/100_4550.jpg Uric

I once curved 1/2 inch by soaking it, then pouring a few pots of boiling water on it. I slowly curved it with ratchet straps. It worked ok, but I didn't seal it, and it got rained on at an event and mostly flattened it out.

So seal it and keep it out of the rain. :D

I wear a linen/cotton gambeson under my mail. I sewed an additional layer of linen over the back and rib area that I can insert strips of closed cell foam.

The best protection to go with mail is good shield work. :D

The trigger is in NO way painful and gives you an extra level of control. It lets you direct the blade better. Almost like point and shoot.

AS my girlfriend (non-SCA) says, I am a dork. I am no nerd, but dork who kicks ass I can live with. :D

Of course unlike some of these internet tough guys, she calls me a dork to my face. As long as they don't call me 'normal' I must be doing something right.

Audax, Sir Brian at Darkwood Armoury does a fantastic Shiavonna hilt with a solid trigger. They run about 100 bucks, but they rock. Have been using one for years. Plus they look better than almost anything out there.

Doug, I think that you need to understand that not everyone in the SCA is the same. There are many who respect the traditions and titles, but judge the worth of the people with them by their actions. Our camp has a standing "no hats allowed" so we have a base where all are equal and you on...

Ilsebet, I know many honorable archers. In Gleann Abhann we have 2 knights that are premier crossbowmen. My knight, Viscount Eric of Chester, has been a champion of the CA community around here. He leads by example, puts himself at risk, and promotes honorable behavior with the weapons form. I don't...

I personally find it easy to love the middle ages AND love the SCA. I know how to separate them, just like I separate the LH stuff I do from the SCA. The SCA does not claim to be historically accurate, therefore I can deal with the parts of it that are not accurate. I love the SCA for the ideals it ...

While there are many aspects of CA that do add to our game, it is this type of behavior that sours it to many. I remember one vividly. A few years ago at a Gulf Wars (when Gleann Abhann was still a Principality) we were doing the fort battle. A knight from inside the fort (I believe it was Sir Cona ...

Another thought occurred to me on finding a place for someone with peer-like qualities that doesn't fit the chivalry. For live weapons to happen, there are those who have to set up targets, replace worn targets, take down targets, marshal the live weapons field, teach, train, record scores and teach...

18g steel suit, currently laced with white para-cord. Made up of 220 plates. It is a bit snug on me (5'7" 168 lbs, 41" chest & 32" waist). It is also long on me, so the bottom row of 41 plates can be used to adjust it. http://i119.photobucket.com/albums/o140/monkeybite/100_4569.jp...

I am on the side that the Laurel should catch those with peer like qualities that are mastering the historical aspect of their given field. If you want a peerage for live weapons, who picks them? For a flat shield, just use 1/2 inch plywood. We use 2 pieces of 1/4 inch when we make our curved shields.

A standard teardrop is probably about 22-24" at the widest and 34-38" long.
