Also, get a roll of the wood grained contact paper (used for lining kitchen cabinets) and cover the back of the shield. It gives it the look of wood with almost zero additional weight. I am also experimenting with gluing a layer of luan door skin to the back of an old aluminum shield to see how that...

Audax, normally I do not. Camric (greenshield) puts a strip of plastic around his edges. On the shield pictured, I put some plastic hose over the top, where it usually starts to break. That is why across the top rawhide I had to put the small cuts in the back, since I used wider rawhide to cover the...

Ludial, I think you really need to get out to a few SCA wars and see how fast they are over. Rarely are they spread out so much that a fast group can slip around and out flank people. The flanking usually occurs when the lines are engaged and the side with more numbers starts to roll around the othe...

Animal, you can get sides of rawhide from Tandy Leather Factory. We cut it into strips about 2 1/2 inches wide and soak them in warm water. Once they are soft, we attach them to the egde of the shield with carpet tacks. Make sure you round off the edges of the wood first. http://i119.photobucket.com...

Your Grace, ask on the SCA chiv list. Last Pennsic I believe it was the king of the West that gifted the Gleann Abhann royalty with coins and the dies that made them as gifts. Someone there can probably point you to them.

There are many of us that do not hate CA, we just want one rule set. I do not want anyone to be allowed to shoot or hit someone in the back, period. If archers want to shoot unaware people in the back, then they should be subject to getting hit unawares in the back. I hate the 'more realistic' argum...

If some of the older fighters are lying to new people, you totally need to pull them aside and confront them on it. If they feel you hit too hard, they should be working with you, not scaring new people. Gossip is destructive and they need a reality check. Try to talk it out with them, but if they h...

David, look at the Bayeux Tapestry. You basically want a long sleeve knee length tunic. I would highly recommend going with a heavy weight linen that you can get online from Fabric Store .com. For color, again look at the BT. If you don't want to spend the extra money on the linen you can go with a ...

Duke Gavin has it right on the ego part. Many people on both sides need to get over themselves. We have a few crossover people in Gleann Abhann and very little of the animosity. What we do have is the spirit of inclusion. We recognize our fencers as part of our army and support them. Our fencing com...

It is a good solid shield Animal, especially if you get one curved. It takes a bit to learn to keep it positioned right so your bottom point stays in the right spot to protect your legs. It is weak in a shield wall for melee though. It will generally always leave one of your legs open to a spearman....

With sabatons you would be fine. And while leather turn shoes offer no real protection either, I think you are risking more with just chain on your feet.

I would rather leather smashed on my foot then chain links.

What kind of shoe are you going to wear them on? People fight in turn shoes and tennis shoes, so if you put mail over those you would be ok.

Now if you wore them over bare feet, then no, you would need more. :D
