But if you are asking about SCA protection, I will side with Duke Phelan. It doesn't do shit against rattan.

But I am down with looking sharp and blocking with my shield.

You can always add the wrap plate to the legs you currently have. Simple to do, especially if you make it out of leather.

Drogo, I use finger gauntlets with thin deer shin on them dyed to look like gloves.

So if you don't want mail mittens, stealth gauntlets are an option.

D, the rope and rawhide will be enough for a buckler.

The shield is heavier and absorbs more impact without moving as much. The buckler (being smaller & lighter) will move more when hit so the abuse is less.
