Re: Rawhide on shields question.

Dang. Cash ran out, no sinew for me, but I do have many, many nails that will work for the 'bent over annealed nail' idea. I will sew the rawhide together in a circle today and stretch it on, clap it down and wait. The first time I did rawhide on a kite shield I tacked it down wet. That didn't work ...

Re: Rawhide on shields question.

check that. Sinew it is. at about $2 per 20 yds it should do well. I have my rawhide sewn into a circle, and it is still in the water. Do I pre drill holes then sew on when wet or do I wait till partly dry and sew through the rawhide or do I wait till all dry?

Re: Rawhide on shields question.

It has come to my attention that making a shield using nails to hold on the edge would be better. I am thinking of using wide headed 2" nails and dealing with them like the nail on the right in the pic below. Think it would pass SCA inspection? http://www.ask-vikingekampgruppe.dk/images/pic1027...

Remember: I'm not stitching the edge, I'm tacking. and I don't have the money for artificial sinew.

Re: A Discussion of the Old and Modern Styles

As to SCA combats effectiveness: Well there are some SCA fighters who are also Law Officers and who can attest that the moves do work quite well when using a police baton against an opponent who's trying to kill you.

If someone managed to get a well placed strike to my face with stabbing quillions. Experimental or not, I'll take it for the coolness factor alone.

Rawhide on shields question.

If I use my leather awl with waxed linen thread to sew the ends of the dog chew rawhide together (so that it forms a circle slightly smaller than the circumference of the round shield) will it hold together when it dries onto the edge of the shield? Should I tack it onto the shield before or after i...

Re: Mass weapon question

Easy idea for a "What is a Mace" rule: The SCA defines a Mace as this- If you put said questionable Mace-like item in Jarl Rolf the Relentless's hands and, all of a sudden, your whole body screams at you to run away this instant, it is a Mace. (note: Jarl Rolf is not absolutely required fo...

Re: A Discussion of the Old and Modern Styles

I have an odd perspective. While I didn't know it at the time I was taking a fairly sportified form of old school Taekwondo. Still... One day I got jumped by 3 guys, all I wanted to do is fight my way clear and run. I did. The stuff I had learned in my dojo saved me. I have been in several fights in...

This was taken just now after I put it in the oven at 550'F for a while. Took it out, and sprayed some gun oil on it.

You may not be able to see from the pic but the blued color is absolutely gorgeous!

I'm on the left, but with the speed of digital cameras I cannot tell you if I'm fighting or teaching.

What I have left to add soonest are winnegas, pants to hide the legs, and an aventail. After that are the hidden arms, fighting tunic, a center-grip round, and better gauntlets.

Re: Buckler in the works. 1st time making one

Fork painting gives a good texture. besides when your opponent is confronted by the fork in the shield, he cannot decide which way to swing! ;)

The texture thing shall (hopefully) be cured by the edging being shrunk on, but I will remember that for next time!

Buckler in the works. 1st time making one

OK so I got a 1/2" piece of pine plywood, cut a 16.5" center grip buckler blank out of it, edged it in 1/2" hemp rope, and have faced it in canvass glued down with wood glue. The handle was cut out of the remainder wood, has been coated in linseed oil & I will be building up a bet...
