Do you have a scrap yard handy?
24-18 guage steel can work, so can 16-14 gauge (?) Aluminum too.
I made mine from scrap I got from a salvage yard here in Reno.

Re: The Iron Chicken stance has got to go (SCA).
Part one, the Italic bit. Part 2 I like. I like it a lot. I am attaching a pic of basket hilts & crosshilts to help explain my post & my thinking. Grey is Sword area hat may be struck, blocked with or anviled dead as appropriate. Blue is illegal target area (the hand), and should not be stru...

Re: The Iron Chicken stance has got to go (SCA).
If you are holding on to a weapon and your hand(baskethilt) gets hit it is not illegal, basket hilts and quillions are the same thing in our game. If you want to only use quillions more power to ya, but it does not change the fact that they both do the same function in the SCA. As to the stance...r...

LF good manual for English Quarterstaff.
Is there a good manual out there (non-Chiv Bookshelf) that shows how to do English Quarterstaff? One of the instructors for my local HEMA Alliance school asked me if there was anything I would be really interested in and this is it. My staff work is sorely lacking and I could use some help. Got idea...

Lamellar and light gambeseon or Chain and heavy gambeseon for body.
Wax hardened leather w/ padding for forearms & elbows. Nothing on the upper arms.
(Note:I am going to be going to early period splint arms & hidden lowprofile elbows as soon as I can)

Re: The Iron Chicken stance has got to go (SCA).
Ivan, Please be careful. I get that you are saying that "Iron Chicken" exposes the hand/forearm more than we should from a historical swordplay perspective, and that's a fine argument. When you say that it is dishonorable crap, and then point to Rorik as an example, it might seem like you...

Then my question is Do you want to dissuade me from using that style? or Mock me negatively for using it? You have posted about how a knight should behave. I only expect you to be that leader with example. If you wish to institute a change and cause real thought, you cant start a real discussion ca...

Re: The Iron Chicken stance has got to go (SCA).
What?!?!? Guardia di Testa is dishonorable and not historical?!?!? Someone better tell Achille Marozzo that. No, Guardia del Pollo di Ferro is what's not historic. Especially when you use it to make up for poor shieldwork, form, stance, and footwork and thus rely upon the honor of your opponent htt...

But yeah, I got to say I love the Tourney best. In all it's permutations.

The Iron Chicken stance has got to go (SCA).
OK.. I got to say this: The Iron Chicken stance has got to go. It's mildly dishonorable, and not really historic. If were all armoured like in 1066 then there are no basket hilts and no gauntlets, and while chopping at someones hand may not be telling, it certainly is possible if he puts his station...

A Question of Glues for Shields.
OK, I plan to make as historically correct a center grip round (for a 8th cen pre-rus Scandinavian) as I can afford to at sometime in the near future. This will be a shield for single combat in the lists and not for the shield wall thus it will be no more than 30" across and be needful of stren...

West March Crown Results.
According to SCA-West the new Crown Prince of the West is Viscount Sir Marc du Arundel. You may know him from SCABastardSword.com. Comendopolis went to Viscount Sir Rorik. So despite Crown ending early due to severe bad weather, and half the continental Kingdom being unable to attend due to the same...

OK, So I know these guys are cool, and what they do looks like a LOT of fun. But I have forgot: #1) How hard they hit (I know they mentioned it once). #2) If there will be video to go with the pics. I searched for the thread where they talked about the above but I couldn't find it. -Ivan
