I have some plane and such but my intention is to produce something thats not terribly cleaned up.....a quick and fast job to make seating. The riving...

Look Ma, no power tools (hand made camp stool): NEW PICS UP
Or, how to have fun riving wood. Im still a bit new to this. Here is a basic roughed out "camp stool" completely riven (split) and hewed. All hand work....and yes this leaves blisters. Many. I present to you, my stool sample: http://www.partsandtechnical.com/my_stool_sample.JPG But I will ...

GPO Bookstore: m All sorts of fascinating publications by the Federal government. (Note, my father put in 43 years with the GPO, starting in the 1920s.) It doesn't look like it's in print at GPO, but you may be able to pull it on an ILL. If not, PM me with your surface address and I'll make a copy;...

OH you lucky son(s)of... I've been looking for a good two-man in usable condition for the better part of ten years. Everyone who has one only uses them for decoration, but no one wants to let one go! =( *sigh* And I've been trying to get rid of two of them for five years... Too bad they are so easy...

When I was a kid, there were a few VERY old trees in Westford, still bearing the royal mark setting them aside for ships lumber. Bob, Do you think any of these are left...

Fine Splints Arms ..with bells (black)
A sort of X post as I think they were being overshadowed... Very nice splint arms. Upper cannons are lined with aluminum with studs (to look like splints on the inside). Very tough. Vambrace has very nice splints, 1/8, shaped to the shape of forearm, with custom made brass buckles. The splints have ...

So, here I am in the early 21st century, using beams from the early 19th century; because that's what we have, and there's no sense wasting them. Given that the medieval period was a materials poor, labor rich society, I'm sure much was reused and reincorporated as necessity and opportunity allowed...

Missed this one over the weekend... Ya - crosscut saw. Pit saws have T-handles or a frame, and are a lot longer. Polish the blade Set the teeth http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saw_set . This gives a wider kerf so the blade has room to pass. Wider is better. You can buy these at antique stores. Get one...

OK first *That is not a ripping saw!* as can easily be seen by the shape of the teeth in the picture! It is a crosscut *only*. Pit saws are quite different! You are in Maryland---go visit Williamsburg VA and see their pitsawing set up. Second if you are having trouble with the kerf not being wide e...

Remember too (for the next version) that there are other proven techniques and alternatives to deep and/or round and/or sharp pieces that are much faster and can produce th...

Sounds like Andrew found where the caltrops got left. I told Good Sir Coat not to leave those things on the pew! Did anyone ever find these illusive functional/affordable finger gauntlets? I love the low profile/ glove look ones, but Dark Heart Amoury who makes them is booked up until Jesus comes back. First time Ive seen this thread. Few thoughts. Wouldnt the chains be heavy? ....er well heavier. The effigy at the top of the thread shows some pretty stout links, leading me to think that they were fairly hefty all told. And in theory, they would add a hair of protection, even if not intended as su...
