Russetting is basically a smooth finish rust that is oiled in to form a protective coating. Sometimes a corrossive is sprayed, painted ontot he surface of a highly polished and cleaned syrface steel. (I buff to a very smooth surface and then wipe with acetone to remove the portective waxes). As rust ...

Channel your weld. Take an angle grinder with a cutting disk and run a deep groove through the length of the weld. No need to go all the way through, but you want pretty well close. The put the helm aside and spend a good two hours practicing and getting to know your welder. Only when you have satis...

WD40 is water based...this makes it a bad idea as a rust repellent. I use a micro wax like Nufinsh. If you are happy spending a little extra then go for a tin of gun wax. It is liek the microwaxes but is better at clinging to bare metal (nufinish and turtle wax type stuff is better at clinging to au...

I always do my shaping and then raise the fluting to follow the lines. Sometimes you can use the fluting to change the lines if you want an effect. Smooth square faced hammer that is not too big and a well made stake are essential to getting this looking right. I use three stakes. One has a long edg...

For crying out loud, folks. Sheetmetal is CHEAP! Give the computer cases to the recyclers. Buy a sheet of steel in the right thickness for what you want. You want a chemical rust remover so that you can see how bad the pitting is. Vinegar will do okay, but one of the kill-rust products would be better. Do not wire brush or sand it back till you have removed the active iron oxide. Realistically if the cops are going to need to be ground back to 20gaug...

I think it is mostly a "right time and place" issue for starting groups like this within the SCA. They had a lot of hi-income people as well as a lot of people who may not have had the money, but had lots of spare time to invest in building stuff. they also used the standards of some of the hi end m...

The Makita is not a bad powershear. In my opinion it is the third best power shear after the Metabo and Bosch. The price is certainly more reasonable then the Metabo, the general quality is good, but you loose some of the orlls royce features like progressive startups and anti-vibration gear. On the...

Yes. Therer are a few ways. My understanding of the coppergate is that the rivet heads are flat and sunk flush with the surrounds. You do not need rivets. Use wire. Get some soft iron wire (or brass or copper or whatever you want). Use a drillbit that is a really tight fit for the wire. Poke the wire through and cut off with o...
