Hear, hear! When I first started reading this thread I was taken by two thoughts. The first was, "I'll bet that MD hasn't done a lot of time in an ER." I'd recommend that the good doctor walk downstairs to ER and talk to some of the cops about how guys with leg wounds can't move. Actually, our Earl...

Here in Aethelmearc we are beginning half-swording experimentation with Earl Yngvar's instigation. I've been watching closely the sidesword developments and they will also get my full encouragement. These things are the result of someone bringing ideas to the marshallate and making them happen. Her...

No- I am talking about perfectly courteous squires who- Use cross hilts only. Use period visors (sometimes with narrow eyeslots). Have guige straps on their shields. Wear mail. Use knightly shields. Etc. They cannot compete at quite the level neccesary. They always stay right below the level needed...

While I don't know specifically about the set you are considering buying, I do know that several years ago at Pennsic, the marshals were bouncing *all* hilts / guards / tsubas / &c that were less than 1.25" in their smallest dimension, in any place, even if said guards did not protrude more than 0.5...

Always protect the Crown or Prince, even at the cost of yourself. I think this could even be expanded to "whoever you're in fealty to"; when I was a squire, we knew it was our job to keep our knight alive, or avenge him with no thoughts of personal survival if we allowed him to be killed. Of course...

Nice bruise. Good luck with not getting another one like that. The worst bruise I have had was from my shield edge. Most of the worst bruises I have seen have been caused not by weapon on flesh, but by driving the edge of a piece of armor into the body. I had one about a year ago where one of the p...

I have a related question: while you might not be able to move on your knees, would you be prevented from using your weapon (or perhaps even a fellow combattant) as a crutch, or hopping about on your remaining good leg? To answer your original question, I think you should do your best to help your side win, in a way that you find to be enjoyable. While you may not be getting as many kills with other weapons as you do with spear, that doesn't necessarily mean that you aren't an important part of your side's success ...

Yeah, wall thickness can definitely be a major issue - my regular spear is one of the thick-walled black ones, 9' long, that I've been using for more than a decade (I usually only use it in limited-frontage battles, and every week in singles practice, so it's seen a lot of use), and while it has som...

Mongols didnt use polearms that I've been able to see. So I figured a spear would be the best thing. But dueling with a spear in an SCA context is very limiting because you cant slash with it. Unfortuneately, it really does vary from kingdom to kingdom, and Pennsic is a case unto itself. As of two years ago, Æthelmearc had a maximum head length of 1/3 of the overall weapon length, and Pennsic rules stated that year (but not since) a minimum head length of 1/3 of the overall weapon len...

Also, I've been led to believe that this is true *until* the finals, that if you toss out one of the combattants at that point, the entire tourney must be re-fought. Now, this solves the problem of making sure that someone who's cheating doesn't win, but it is also grossly unfair to anyone else who...

I think the main reason to limit the thrust to the face is safety. Remember, it is only to be a telling blow, just enough force to move the helm. With the face, the recipient can usually judge if it is on target (at least with a bargrill) by actually seeing the point of contact. Anywhere else on th...

Also, while it clearly states in the Society regs that a cut to the face should be take lighter than to other parts of the body, I'm not sure I've ever seen this actually done. Re: Different conventions on helm side/top/back
Ignoring the face thrust conventions, it has become apparent that different kingdoms have different rules on thrusts to the sides, top & back of a helm. I have seen three flavors of this mentioned. First, some kingdoms consider the entire helm to be a valid target. That if you get thrust in the sid...

I'm curious too. In Ansteorra, Ducal Perogative means you can withdraw anytime from a crown without loss of honor.
