If anyone gets carried away with this hunting game they are complete idiots. This is a GAME. After all the fighting i expect to see people sitting around drinking and telling lies about how great they were on the field. Last year at war Nissan lent Darrius the clovenshield bannerman for the field b...

Regarding who should be a knight in the SCA. What i was trying to say is if you want to have an Arthurian ideal of a knight then have that as the standard. If thats NOT the standard then the mongols, Samurai and others shouldnt be excluded even if they choose not to play the game the way you want. ...

If Meridies really wants to hit lighter than all the other kingdoms, I don't really care why. I think it is a very bad idea, but it is up to them whether they want to do that or not, within reason. So long as they don't complain when they visit other kingdoms or when someone from outside of the king...

And to be brutally honest, many of the guys who people hold up as worthy are simply not good enough fighters >especially in single sword and shield combat< which is the test of fighters for SCA Knighthood. Alaric I normally agree with most of what you write. But I disagree that sword and shield is ...

Guys, I am beginning to feel like I am talking but no sound is coming out. In the fifth post in this particular thread, I described a war point battle at Gulf Wars 5 in which Mercs played a pivotal role in the battle, accomplishing something that nobody had ever done before, and winning a war point...

"""So if a merc who happens to be a master of arms attacks his own kingdom or crown, or defames them verbally, is just as much in violation of his obligations as a knight would be. There is no difference. So sorry, giving such a merc a Baldric makes no more sense than giving them a knights' belt. I...

Did not certain warriors in pretty much EVERY culture not seek to become legends? The Elite? The very best? Did the finest warriors in ancient Greece, among the Vikings, and all the other non-chivalric culture not have names, or designations? Of course. Basically, if I chose to be a pre-chivalric e...

In my opinion, having a Mongol or Viking or pre-Chivalric period Knight is no big deal... Knighthood in this case mean a Knight of the Society for Creative Anachronism. Masters at Arms were created that a member of the SCA who was opposed to swearing oaths, I believe for religious reasons, could still be a peer but not have to swear an oath to anyone. Rather than follow the "I swear or affirm" pattern that was adopted by the US govt and court system, the option to...

Yes, Equites. No. It was not the equivalent of knighthood. No more than Samurai's were. You could say the positions have similarities and share some common ideals, but that doesn't make it the equivalent of knighthood. However the roman soldier, particularly in mounted form, had been mentioned by s...

The majority of mercs I know are not "outsiders". They are SCA members in SCA garb, playing by SCA rules. I think the issue there is the mindset that "noble" is incompatible with "mercenary", when, in fact, historically, that is patently NOT the case, at least as often as it _is_ the case. Maeryk A...

The majority of mercs I know are not "outsiders". They are SCA members in SCA garb, playing by SCA rules. So, Richard, what do you think of "free lancing," which is to say a knight (or above--say a knight bannerette) hiring himself and his retinue out to the highest bidder? Oh, btw, have paid your scutage? Mord. Free lancing can work if done carefully. The SCA structure is a bit whacked, since knights ...

Heairn. I agree with about 90% of what you wrote, a good summary. The 10% I don't agree with, I can at least understand why you feel that way. The whole point to the SCA structure where we are all presumed to be noble and treat each other as nobles, with chivalry as the core unifying principal, with...

I can't recall that any Japanese travelled to Europe with the Portugese at the end of period, but I could be wrong there. Beg your pardon, sir, but you are.
