My favorite part was the shield. It reminded me a bit of the one in the NYC Metropolitan Museum of Art. Nice kit too. What did the entire thing cost including the soft kit?

The SCA is not supposed to be fantasy based, most LARP's are fantasy based, even though LARP as a term originally was used to cover non-fantasy based role playing too. So technically aspects of what the SCA does, is technically LARP, though most people don't think of the SCA as being a LARP. LARP ha...

If people want a lighter shield may I suggest a smaller one? The kind you can use on horseback. If they'll let me use a horse in the lists, I'll gladly use a smaller shield. You are required to use a horse in our lists. You must mean the SCA's. You are welcome in ours anytime! I can even loan you a...

I thought it was common knowledge that stick fighting was an authentic medieval practice. SCA combat has elements in common with this even though we prefer to pretend our sticks are swords, just as many of the Venetians may have. And for some of the stick fighting they used bar grilled helms. The Ve...

Dearest Brother- I most certainly DON'T need anyone around me whose vision of the Game is so out of synch with mine that I would stay upset about anything they do or say on the field longer than a minute. The whole concept of calling your own blows is based upon respect and common culture...common ...

First, By some mistaken impression; it is believed that I stated I was a member of the AMOM. I am NOT a member of that order. I am of a minor noble house and am of the Cadet line for that house. I would LOVE to be given entrance to either of the orders I know members and hope one day to earn that r...

As far as Richard's comments about shield weights, I think for most surviving medieval heaters we can assume that about four pounds of weight has been lost due to extreme shrinkage and drying over the centuries. However, I maintain that common sense would dictate that the heaviest shield that one c...

Re: A very sticky Question of recreation
Good gentles, I have a very unpleasent and sticky question to ask the membership and am very interested in the views and responses. Please take this question with full seriousness. How does one deal with groups or individuals who take on titles or names of groups that are historical or religious or...

The vast majority of heralds are well intentioned volunteers whom we should encourage and go out of our way not to embarass via public commentary. In almost all cases, if they are screwing up or doing a bad job it is because they are either new, untrained, confused, nervous in public, made a mistake...

I have several poleaxes & axes with Rathbone, Mandrake rubber heads and one Brian Price (Revival) rubber head. All work well and deliver a sturdy blow (no extra padding on them). I think the Mandrake and Revival look the best. The Mandrake look nicest as generic bladed axes of any kind, the Revival ...

Shields were made to be totally disposable, but there was no rule regarding how thick and heavy they were. A man used the heaviest shield he could use- period. I am coating a shield made of two pieces of Luan in a few days- if it works my shields will weigh about the same as the lightest aluminum s...

I'm reading about the weights and it sounds like these are wonderful shields that may unfortunately be very, very heavy compared to period shields of the same size and design. I wonder if a shield with similar look and no edging, could be achieved that would be longer lasting and weigh out more like...

Perhaps I'm naive in thinking that we share the same Culture, with few variations. I wouldn't feel uncomfortable taking the field in any kingdom, fighting hard and fair, and then sitting down with the locals for dinner afterward. Isn't the expectation of friendship part of what the SCA is all about...

"An SCA person not trained with a martial foundation may be valiant against bladed weaponry, yet his prospects are slim opposite a martially trained Swordsman because it's outside his realm of practice and training." Another point: As much as it irks some here to read, not all people in the SCA consider themselves "at a grand tournament" when they are fighting. So, is kendo a martial art? Based on my understanding of kendo(and I'm no scholar of Kendo) and it's having evolved from a traditonal "system of self-defense or combat" (kenjutsu, which may in turn be an evolution of an even older system), I am forced by reason to say that it does meet the definiti...

Erm there are a lot accepted myths about how the nobility was supposed to treat their inferiors in this thread. A good noble treats his staff well and with dignity, his or her staff are an extension and proof of their status. You do not and cannot have a noble strata without the people to support i...

i will leave your other comments alone, but no, fencing is not a martial art. Never was, never will be. It was meant to be a sport and still is a sport. Yeah, I hate authority in all it's forms. It is usually driven by hypocracy and shameful greed. The reason I can tolerate SCA authority is because it's based on something that DOESN'T involve money. You can't buy prowess or wisdom. But I am glad that there are people in the SCA who are willing to u...

Martial art can mean a lot of things. Much of what I see taught in modern American karate classes is beautiful, teaches discipline, but has limited value in a street fight especially if your opponent manages to grapple and ground you, turning it into a wrestling match. Dojo's are turning out black b...
