Owen: "This is my point of view. Years back, when I was active in MSR, I (as Richard will tell you) constsntly argued that my SCA brigandine and Wisby CoP, both with plastic plates, should have been considered as good as the leather suits common in the group, which were not even close to being histo...

Chef, I am sorry that your experiences with the SCA were so disappointing. It does not surprise me however, as too many times I have witnessed similar stupidity, especially at public demos. For what it is worth, the SCA does actually have quite a bit to offer, especially if you can ignore the idiots...

Witness the violence inherent in the system. That pretty much sums it up for me. The idea of the knight in shining armour, a very Victorian version, took root in my imagination at an early age. The SCA gave me the opportunity (along with MSR) to get involved in a type of combat loosely based on medi...

Hi Chef. That was a very good analysis of the situation. Unfortunately, the SCA runs into numerous problems with logic: 1) Many SCA'ers are from the economic dregs of society (misfit adults) or students (legitimately busy putting money into education) or they have a family. These often simply refuse...

LOL Vitus. Yes, though I made his life miserable during the event. He really is a good guy. BTW, he recently got back into competitive (modern) archery along with his 14 year old son and wife. The son is good enough that he has been told he will be given a manufacturer's sponsorship if he is willing...

It would be one thing if they are worried about crests that have narrow or worse, narrow long projections with say arrow tips/arrow nocks or spikes or something on them going through an occularioum. But all projections must be 1/4" wide? dumb, dumb, dumb. If they are really worried about rattan, ban...

As a general statement, SCA armour, especially the typical SCA plate armour and helm, is quite different from its historical counterpart. That being said, we don't have enough period pieces, especially from the 15th century and earlier periods (pre 1500) to be sure of many of our assumptions. Every ...

Turned? Yes, I'd like them to be turned into fertilizer. There are plenty of groups that exist for the fantasy oriented. I have nothing against fantasy. I even like D&D and think LARP is fine. But that is not what the SCA is for. It is just like my old Tuchux argument; If you go to a Tuchux event, a...

In the middle ages, helms really functioned as sturdy hats that doubled as buckets. No one really wore one when fighting. Take a look at the Richard Gere documentary "First Knight", he immediately removes his helm when engaging the enemy. As far as shields? Only wussies use shields. They were mainly...

SCA - Wilmot domination of East Kingdom
Those who know Duke Ronald Wilmot may be interested to know that not only is the current King of the East Ronald's former squire Sir Darius (orginally named, Johann, then Gunther, long story), but the crown prince is (Count) Sir Andreas (AKA Ice Falcon) who was squired to Sir Wulfstan who was one of...

Several people swear that using a drill press instead of a hand held drill makes a huge difference. Logically I can see where this makes sense, though using a hand drill works for me provided the piece is held securely in place so even pressure can be applied. Then again, I don't drill stainless in ...
