Apparently I am an idiot. When we played with this, the ball we used was not the 16 pounder I recalled, the ball we used was lighter, but I do not remember what is was for sure. I must have been thinking of the ball from Sir Peter's test (I seem to remember him doing this at Pennsic years ago, is th...

Um, I don't remember referencing good Sir Peter's study or any averages. I also pointed out that a lot of the SCA hits lightly and does not wear much armour. Quite frankly, a number of people knocked the ball farther than I did. I think my light swords were typically 3 1/2' to 4', heavier swords wen...

I think we need a real standard of force, something measurable to use as a general guideline. It would make bringing the out of control areas back into alignment. It would also be great to use this as part of an authorization. Say if your shot won't move a 16lb bowling ball on a shoulder height pole...

Hi all! Great input. Thank you. Part of what brought this up was a number of SCA knights over the years who profess in persona to be pagans, wiccans, agnostics, atheists, Protestants, witches, Jews, Druids, or modern/out of period variations of the Christian faith. As well as a large number of SCA f...

So you want to be an SCA Knight: Is God On Your Side?
In period, religion was a huge part of everyday life in Western Europe during the middle ages. It was a very different world than the one we live in today, which is largely secular. In the middle ages, even those that did not believe truly, usually acted outwardly as if they did in order to avoid su...

You could consider Musashi's book, in English it translates to something like "The Book Of Five Rings". You can get an English translation online at /www.samurai.com/5rings/ I lifted this section as it pertains to the gaze I spoke of. It is not exactly the same, but the people that gave me this idea...

Hi Chef. I tend to agree with those that say it is possible that this is an early appearance of an extremely uncommon visor style, perhaps even a one off. I see no reason why it is not technically feasible. On the other hand, I agree with you that due to it being so early, that without other support...

1) The part about breaking ankles was dark humour for Mordreth's benefit. Many years ago I broke one of his squire's ankles accidentally. He was a short, very strong lefty heater fighter. He tabled his shield to block my view after I legged him and he started a barrage of blows as he pivoted beneath...

So you want to be an SCA Knight? - Equestrian Pursuits
Unlike the SCA stated requirements for knighthood, in period a knight was largely defined by his original and lasting role as a mounted warrior. Often it is too impractical, expensive and timeconsuming for many SCA'ers to develop riding skills within the SCA, much less to acquire the appropriate arm...

Hi Asbjorn. I agree with 99.9% of what you wrote. The SCA rules are inconsistant, badly written etc. In fact, the reason the East Kingdom has the very specific rule that you quoted, is because people were misinterpreting the intent of the SCA rules and the East sought to prevent unchivalrous and unk...

His excellency, Sir Rhys is not fat. He merely carries the weight of having once borne the crown of the East upon his shoulders. And his hips. And his stomach... PS. Coat of plates is very useful for hidden protection. Reinforced surcoats are another. Both automatically hide the plastic if the surcoat shifts or if a tabard is used instead. Brigandines tend to have to be more fitted and as a result do not work as well for a single outfit that needs to fit many pe...

Short fighters tend to do best in Ansteorra, Meridies and Trimaris. Since few people wear armour, the short guys can simply jump high and pop people in the head. Here in the East the short guys are to weighed down to get much of a vertical leap or hang time (heavier objects falling faster than light...

I would have mentioned Vitus, but it seemed like every time a short person posts a question about short fighters, we all point to Vitus. I have mixed feelings about grappling. If we are talking about full blown grappling, I am against it for the SCA. If we are talking about limited grappling such as Rhys has suggested, the idea has merit. I certainly am intrigued by the possibilities some of it offers, particularly half swording. I w...

A gentle who enters the armoured combat lists of the SCA and does not armour spots that are designated by SCA rules of the list as legal targets, is to blame for any and all shots that land on an unarmoured portion of his person. If there is any lack of chivalry, it is on the part of the unarmoured ...

So You Want To Be An SCA Knight: Appropriate Garb For Your P
In the SCA, many people who aspire to the Chivalry strive for a period appearance in the lists and melee, prowess in martial activities, proper heraldic display and the like. Often this hard work, attention to detail and general appearance level is not maintained out of the lists and out of armour. ...
