Owen "Richard, I have greaves with my 1st C. kit, and they are authentic and appropriate. They only cover the front (and the knee), though, not the back of the calf." Good point, but you are also a pre-medieval Roman. I always think of the SCA as knightly combat between people who could be visitors ...

Broken ankles suck. Mordreth broke his ankle at one point if I remember correctly. And I was once fighting one of his squires, a tough, short, muscular lefty. He tabled his shield and did an interesting series of rotations beneath it so I had trouble telling where he was and his sword blocks were go...

Mr. Clements techniques are excellent. I particularly enjoy his use of invective and sarcasm. Seriously, any book or work that teaches you how to use a sword may be applicable to the SCA. Due to the fact that we are trying to emulate medieval armoured tournaments, some techniques, such as draw cuts,...

Well, sometimes they do. Although "power" in the SCA is generally held by the best "singles" fighter or those that he (the crown) elevates or appoints to kingdom level administration positions, often other fighters or those who share the mindset of the single combat victor. This can be a good thing,...

If you don't want to be chivalrous and knightly, don't fight
OK. I am so sick of hearing about how fighters don't have to be chivalrous, not all want to be knights, should do whatever it takes to win, we fight wars and in wars the infantry would rape, kill, murder, pillage, etc. ad nauseum. Then we get to hear about how the SCA is so all inclusive, that we ha...
