Well... First off, if you have a knight or a teacher you have a committment to, ask he or she first. Otherwise: 1) Physical conditioning. Get into the best possible physical condition you can. Emphasize a combination of strength with explosive power, with endurance. Training for a middle weight boxe...

Both WMA and SCA have value. Some of what the SCA does will not work with real swords and we have some odd rules and conventions (some based on safety perceptions and some based on nothing other than tradition). Some of what WMA groups do cannot be done full speed, full force without breaking or kil...

While I am one of those who think a comprehensive full plate harness such as yours would typically have some lower leg protection typically made of plate, there is evidence to show that at least some non-plate protection for the lower leg and feet was used. I'm not sure about no armour at all though...

Early 14th Century Shield In Hermitage, Purpose?
m Does anyone know if this shield on the Hermitage web site is an actual combat shield or just decorative? The link shows it as Genoa, 1st half of the 14th century, wood, tempera and glasss beads, from the collection of A.P. Basilewski, Paris. Also what it weighs currently, how it is strapped, const...

Quick notes on yesterday's trip. It was a great experience. Dr. Jeffrey Forgeng despite his many obligations, spent almost the entire day with Dave Rylak, Jeffrey Wasson, Nick Friend (sp?) and I. I had not been expecting to have quite that much time offered to us, it was quite amazing. We started ju...

Thank you for the advice. In the meantime, I gave up and decided to get a modern reprint of the Hewitt in Paperback, which is definitely available from Naval & Miliatry Press. I was avoiding this because no one can tell me if these are less than full size reprints that might be hard to read. On the ...

Try hitting 0 when asked for the number option. It usually kicks you to a actual person, and gets you out of the number option. I did, no luck. And if you manage to tell them you want a real person, it goes to a message directing you to the live chat option on the home page. Sigh. I understand Ebay...

Alibris-Do you have problems w/armour research book orders?
I ordered a number of books through Alibris, partly because of good selection and because they had first edition hardcovers at decent prices, also they take credit cards and I'm short on cash. But the two I most wanted for research, A.R. Dufty's European Armour in The Tower of London and Hewitts 186...

Ebay - Some Creep Trying To Rip Off Losing Bidders
I lost out on an auction the other day fair and square. Today I got an E-Mail supposedly sent by an Ebay "lakebrink2006" member who turned out to be pretending to be the seller, telling me the winner withdrew/was rejected, so I was now the default winner. Worse, it had Ebay graphics all over it, he ...

WARNING!!!!! Some bastard just tried to scam me. I received the E-Mail below, basically telling me that the winning bidder on L'Arte was rejected and I was the winner by default. This made no sense, since a different seller and state was listed. I contacted E-Bay online chat help and was told this w...

Congratulations to Gaston. I was not completely surprised by the price, I was guessing maybe $800 though, so it went for more. I've seen these typically in the $250 to $700 range in the past depending on condition, though I haven't seen a really cheap one in some time. But over a grand? Maybe there ...

ARGHH! My Dufty Book Is not Coming!
European Armour in The Tower of London was confirmed as ordered through www.alibris.com for only $98.44. But the bookseller they took the order for already sold it to someone else. I've only been trying to get this book for about 6 years at a reasonable price. Damn it. On the plus side, now I have t...

And the best for last. The mother of all Italian armour books. L'Arte Dell'Armatura in Italia m Most definitely my fourth (maybe fifth, but definitely up there) favorite book on armour. An absolute must have for the armour book collector. If this goes anywhere near the 400.00 mark.... I would kick ...

You can often learn a lot by spending part of your time watching good fighters do some pickup fights with other good fighters. When they are taking a break, ask them how they did a particular thing that you would like to know how to do and also if they have time for a fight or two with you. Also, do...

Would you care to fill us in on the reserves? I see this all the time with auctions and I don't understand it. Peter Fuller - Armorer's Workshop Video Volume 2 On DVD
I just had a short but good conversation with Peter Fuller. Armorer's Workshop Volume 2 is out now and on DVD instead of just VHS. You can get both volume 1 and 2 from Paladin Press (you can also get them from Peter at Medieval Reproductions www.medievalrepro.com / (403) 262-6220 but he is out of st...

How about, "He wrote Sir Nigel and also The White Company, so anything he writes may contain pearls of wisdom to be gleaned." or "It's Sir Arthur Conan Doy...
