Not exactly what you're asking about, but there's a thread on MyArmoury from a few years back, where they got into the discussion of scales dipicted on 14th century images of armored ventails. m Mainly they mention the stained glass images of Tewkesbury. But there's atleast one example posted of an ...

I'm going to have to contest what you say there, David. And I'm trying to be argumentative, but (atleast in the USA where the title holds no legal or official governemental status or powers) the King of your kingdom IS the KING. A Knight of the SCA is a knight. Because our organization says so. (Not...

I've gotten some headway on the hardware for the new rattan gladius yesterday. I have extra material to do about 2 or possibly 3 more sets. If anyone is interested in the pommel/guard combo or a finished sca rattan sword or a pugio, you can shoot me a pm.

I think it's pretty typical. With my full gaunts, even though they are not in full contact, with use (swinging) they will tear up hockey tape and duct tape handles as well as bare rattan. I've had many people handle my leather grips with no serious damage, so I've changed almost all of my handles to...

No one's making fun of LARP. It's a discussion of nomenclature. Is SCA a LARP or is it a living history or other group (That's how it is described in Wikipedia..Not by me.) Or does LARP describe all people that pretend to be something other then what defines them by their professional career and mai...

SCA is a LARP. Deal with it. The problem is that by that logic; all people that are real and doing something and donning a non legal name, are LARP. Which means; Reenactors, Recreationists, Living History, SCA, WMA, renfesties, impressionists, screen/tv actors, and radio DJ's are all LARPers. The R...

But you have to admit that there are fundamental differences between the SCA and a LARP as they are defined today. In fact, I've heard it argued that there are differences between living history, reenactments, and (whatever period) enthusiasts. And have heard of threads going on for months on some b...

Completely moot. The skill level of the individual and WHAT they are fighting for, have proven to be as significant as the weapons and potential damage they can inflict. Anachronistic conflicts between beings of battle should be left to the SCA. I don't disagree with the result, but not because of a...

Thanks, Tristan. Here's a link to my personal sword scabbard project. There's a picture of my heavy crosshilt sword (2 lbs. 12 oz) in a couple of the photos. It is a tapered piece of 2.5" rattan with leather on the edges to extend the blade life. People that handle it seem to like the balance. ...

I am a big proponent of gambesons for SCA heavy combat (the type made by gambisons.com, gmandragora, revival and worn by people like Murdock). They are obviously hotter then no padding, but they do provide a modicum of bruise and grass-rash protection on parts of the body that we tend to neglect wit...

You should get with Vitus for knightly weapons. His squire (I think it's Eadric) also does very nice swords. You can also get some really nice scabbards for your sidearms from Sir Vitus. I've recently made a pompeii inspired gladius as a back-up weapon (a fish bat) for a friend. You can see here: m ...

You can also look at the parade harness of Emporer Charles V "Aria Romana". It dates to the 16th century, but it's the style you are talking about, I believe. It has a muscled curaiss and the armored feet have embossed toes so it looks as if the wearer is barefoot.

That doesn't look much further back then a deep cervallier (comes down past the ears and believed to have been worn over a camail) that dates to around 1330. The bascinets that I think of being typical of the 4th quarter of the century are like on Anshelm arms web site (back point), or the black pri...

I'm in agreement with the back point bascinet (like you see on the Anshelm arms website) dates to around 1375+. Center point bascinets, with a slight drift to the back date much earlier. It's not to say that they don't date to much earlier, but there's no evidence that they did (and we tend to make ...

I wanted a celleta from the time I started with the SCA, but moved my impression back 70 years from the time they would have been in use (50 years from the time, if I were doing a Milanese persona).
