I still have 600 stainless steel links available. (the person that had dibbs is holding off on buying for now). Includes a long length of steel wire for peening. Order by the 50 pack. Perfect to toss in your armoring tool box. All you need is diagonal cutters, a pair of linesmen pliers (and possibly...

Okay, I found a great replacement for the rivets in these stainless steel rings. It took a bit of scrounging around in hardware stores, but 16 ga galvenized picture hanging wire fits perfectly! It's a bit annoying that you have to nip off about 3-4 mm of wire for each ring, but the bonus is that it'...

Great pictures. I think you need to understand the tactics of the period to appreciate what it is you want to portray. Up until the 16th century, most ships equipped for maritime battles had two groups: ships crew (sailors) and soldiers (marines). The sailors sailed the ships to perform the very dif...

It's the same material; cobalt blue 100% silk velvet. And it has a nice shimming color to it in day light. But I was working with it inside in incandescent light and didn't really notice that the color shift was so severe until after the glue had set. (I've never worked with velvet before). With the...

Yesterday and today I worked on re-doing my greaves. Since I'm re-doing the cuisses, it seemed only fair to re-do the greaves. Take a look at the picture of my legs above (where you can see the poleyn and the sabaton), and you can see the old half greave or shin guard (It doesn't encase the whole ca...

I notice that their helms are all 16 or 14 ga mild. Most people around here consider 14 to be pretty easily dentable. Most insist on a 12 ga minimum in mild. I'd probably use one as a combat archer. But all of the ones I like would need modification with a grill and back plate modification to use. -...

I'd suggest you just go buy some 1"x1" inside 10 ga. square steel tubing. 10 ga is .1406 so if you get the 1x1 (make sure they are giving the inside size), you'll wind-up with a bar that is 1.2812" outside dimension, which should pass marshal inspection for not having a grill penetrat...

I also added a linen liner to my helmet earlier this month. You can see the thread here: m It's definately more comfortable than foam. The immediate thing I notice is that the cotton and linen doesn't make your head sweat like the blue foam. Obviously, when you have your head wrapped in foam, you're...

I think you might be side-stepping an integral point of the message in that they may make certain charges usable by anyone (specifically the pelican and the closed chain of links). I really think you are underestimating people's appreciation for simple aesthetic beauty and craftsmanship. I know as the artist, you will be the worst critic, and you think if it's not utilitarian in some modern fashion it will have little value to people. The simple fact is that what you've crafte...

A pair of poleynes/knees made of 16 ga. stainlesss steel. They are 7" wide, by 7" tall with a medial ridge, flared top and bottom and about 4.25" in depth. I would call these an extra-large. I'm 220 and 6'3" but these are about 1.5" too wide for me. I tried several methods t...

Actually, in Atlantia, the rule for combat archers is this; "3.6.1.3.1 A blow that strikes a legal target area with telling force will be acknowledged." The reason for this is because archers are considered fully armoured combatants. So the half gauntlet rule applies to archers as well. T...

Kingdom rules supercede SCA rules. Case in point is that in the SCA rulebook, they comment about 9' and 12' spears, but in some kingdoms there are only 9' spears. Also some ammunition on missile weapons is not allowed all kingdoms. In Atlantia, we do not allow heavy bows at this time. But there is t...

In atlantia, if you are doing combat archery (we have a touch kill rule here) the marshals will usually pass a gauntlet like this, so long as you have a glove on your hand (example from Stonekeep): http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3364/3233547549_8439cb6476.jpg But if you're fighting heavy, the marsha...

It doesn't exactly work that way because by reducing the draw distance you drop the weight. So if the weight is 150 at 8", by reducing the draw to 6" you might measure only 100 lbs, which means you would have a crossbow that is equal to 600 inch lbs. at 6" (Does that make sense?) You ...
