Thank you, Sir Corby. To be completely honest, it didn't even occur to me to even think of putting canvas on the back side. I had thought of just painting it, momentarily. But that sounded messy. I I saw that you had the handle more paralell with the edge of the shield, but decided to do what was mo...

That would be the alibaster effigy of the 1st Baron Reginald De Cobham. 1. There are other effigies that have this black armor; Sir Oliver d'Ingham has similar black arms and shins (But like Sir Reginald, not the gauntlets, poleynes or couters). It's been theorized that the black may be representing...

The next thing to work on are my cuisses. I used these for about a year, but they simply aren't protective enough for someone that leaves his forward leg open all the time. After a few practices last year, my leg looked like hamburger. (Cuisses are your thighs, FYI.) http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2...

Are you okay with a composite (laminated wood bow) or does it have to be a solid wood? is there a price you're looking to get it for? You will occasionally see oak and hickory advertised as an english longbow, but the modulus of elasticity and the brittleness of the wood requires that they cannot be...

In my opinion, 14th century mafia is the easiest to do historically correct and still be SCA legal. There's also an abundance of companies that manufacture the pieces, so you have a smorgasborg of armor from the 14th cen to chose from. Note that klapvisors are later period then sugarloafs. The SCA i...

We have a bit of the opposite problem, in that we have a very heavy quantity of colleges/universities and army bases all that fall within our Barony, but we have a very small venue for practices which we share with rapier and musicians (which is actually quite wonderful to have so much activity goin...

I don't know him or have his permission to use it, but Lord Jabril al'Dakhil (I think from East Kingdom) is very photogenic. I have Oak armory gauntlets by Sasuke. I paid like $800 for these second hand. He was doing them new for about $950, when I enquired about a year ago. You'd have to ask him for current pricing and if he's taking commissions. http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3264/3206594535_4a325a0a83_m.jpg Oak's armor...

To be honest, I had more trouble trying to weave the rings then peening. I was driving myself nuts trying to slip the rings, so that it layed the same way as adjacent rings. I stormed out fo the room a couple of times because I'd spend 15 minutes putting 1 ring in place, and peen the rivet and then ...

I finished packaging up the rings and rivets into packs this morning, and found I have about 700 links left (I had about 1600 in total), but not enough rivets for all of the rings I have. I'm going to look around and see if I can find a steel wire that will work (the rivets are bigger then a 16 ga w...

FS:Surplus riveted stainless steel chain links
I recently split a purchase of replacement links with some fellow archivers because I was just filling in some damaged/missing links and filling the voids in the aventail on my bascinet to make it hang properly to give the correct sillouette on the helm. Anyhow, I have a surplus of these flat ring, ...

Control was an issue due to the lack of grip. I will be taking the wire off and redoing it. I'm curious to know if there's actually precedent for a wire wrapped hilt on an Oakshott type XIII. All the examples I've seen were leather wrapped (over wood and possibly cord), but most of the XIII date to...

I remember seeing 13th cen illuminations in reference to the death of Thomas A becket that had men in pill-box helmets like that, but worn over chain camails or hoooded chain hauberks. No nasals on them though, and I don't have the images saved. Look for illuminations from the late 12th and 13th cen...

That is really neat. Just as an aside, from that video you posted. There's an associated video of a 3-barrel handgonne (pole type) being shot. QUILLS: Cat, you can get quills from 17th century living history suppliers like JAS Towsen and Son. (They sell writing quills for about $3 ea). Most of the better quills come from geese, but you can probably use turkey as well. The problem is that you only get about 2-3 feathers per wing that are us...

I would suggest foremost to get in touch with Master Magnus and see if you can find out where he got the inspiration, as it may take you to a direct reference. I was going to suggest Holkham bible, as well for the visor (f.40) . But, in the Holkham (circa 1327) the helms appear to be more top pointe...

I would guess a pen knife and a rule of some sort. Scribes often used the back of the pen knife to etch a very light guide line onto vellum to rule the paper and box in the locations of where illuminations would go. And of course the pen knife allows you to re-cut the nib when it has worn or become ...

This monday I finished re-strapping and covering my shield. I was having a problem with the shield's balance...tipping forward at the top due to the top heavyness of the handle. I also couldn't fit my gauntleted hand into the metal bracket type handle, and so I did the following: http://farm4.static...

I like Insane's comment about leveling up. As you get better (or they perceive your comfort level increasing) your opponents may be holding back less. If it's only against the lefties, then it sounds like no one has told you how to fight a lefty properly. If you're not used to it, then you can't app...

I could have sworn I saw one combat archer during the second woods battle between Atlantia/Aethelmark.
