I would suggest crimping and gluing. To make a crimper, I had to do some dremel work to a pair of cheapo diagonal cutters. I'm not sure if this is the problem, as I've never bought hosen from that company. Hose, if wool, should be tight to your legs and buttocks. The ones sold by Historic Enterprise...

Here's yet another 1917 translation from the project Gutenberg site (David Price, J.M.Dent). This is a translation of the whole description of Wales by Geraldus: m A must read if you are doing a Welsh impression of that period. Damn your vulcan logic!

Any clue about the proper order of precedence as displayed, Sir B? Does a consort's OP put the combatant in front of another combatant with a higher rank?
(I'm actually curious in the case of listing for scrolls).

Leave it to BdB to find the ruling in sub-section schaffas S under 12 other sub-sections in the massive Atlantian "Great book of Law". Personally, I find its title misleading. Having read through it completely once; I'd call it the "mediocre, good to get your sleep on, book of law&quo...

If you're interested in portraying Welsh in the discussed period, this is a quick read on the internet. One of the questions commented on is about Welsh armor: m It seems that it's merely conjecture as there is no solid evidence to armor or clothing. One comment from a late 12th century contemporary...

I think the tried and true "supply a deposit" and then the final payment upon completion is historically the best option between armorer and customer. A third party will muddle things aweful, and then you'll get stuck in the middle of having to mediate between the two parties. Then you are...

I have the grozer old scythian, which I've used for SCA combat archery. It will throw a balder blunt like no body's business. It's a reflex/deflex bow and has zero hand shock. It's a bit under weight (28# at 28") for SCA combat archery, but it has an excellent cast. The first few times I shot i...

I don't think anyone knows 100% sure why some effigies have legs crossed and others do not. The crusades theory has some holes in it, as there are some individuals who did crusade and do not show legs crossed, and a few others who never crusaded and do have a leg over the other.

Looks like a simpler design then the one's I've done. Uses less leather. I start out with a 5 ft. strop of leather to do just the short end of the belt (the part that wrapps around, though a lot is wastage). I think the one on the effigy could still have thongs laced through the scabbard itself (lik...

Yes. I even wore it at Pennsic this year. Wonderful helmet you made here, Andrew. It currently is in a slightly disassembled state while I prepare it for a sewn-in liner and padding for the aventail. Here's a picture of my bascinet. The one on the left with the aventail. Vervelles would probably stay more parallel with the bottom edge of the helm rather then turn up at a 45 deg at the face opening (I aim for 1360's, and so it's not a big stretch). But note the profile of the helm. Very gentle ba...

Plate gauntlets existed by the late 13th century, but hourglass gauntlets didn't appear until about the mid 14th. Until then, some "plate" gaunts weren't even steel but whale bone. They were probably similar to the Wisby (c1361) finds, which are a little anitquated (in style) for the battl...

My vote is for cervallier or open faced bascinet, would be most common for men at arms. Kettle and Great helms are also still in use, but they (great helms) were often worn over top of a cervalliere or bascinet. As Cet mentions, back point bascinets, especially the very pointy ones are late 14th cen...

Prior to this past pennsic, it was required that foam tipped missiles (e.g. not balders) were to have 1.25" diameter padded heads with a 1/2" minimum of compressible padding on the surface (similar to thrusting tips of melee weapons). The 4 helm penetrations by missiles (note that Balin fa...

Suit weight wool worsted and twill for clothing. More linen wouldn't hurt, but for the 14th cen Mafia, only your undergarments and shirts should be linen. I would also notate that due to the simple laws of physics, that due to the mass of the arrow, it is less likely to make contact on your face or eye then a thrusty point of a sword, which by the rules can be just as small as an arrow tip (1.25"). The thrust of a sword, and the accompanying forc...

The rule of minimal bow length is primarily for self wood longbows. For a longbow, you want something taller then you are, because as a selfwood bow, it doesn't want to bend into a tight curve and it will have the tendancy to break. But the rule of thumb is 5" taller then you are (unstrung) is ...
