More rattan. I think I'm going get cancer from inhaling rattan dust. (COUGH). Almost finished SCA rattan bollock dagger after second coat of laquer to the handle. 18" total length without a thrusting tip. The balls are wood, and glued onto either side of the rattan that was narrowed to 1"....

I've been looking around for a kit like this for a few months, since Pennsic. I'd suggest you get in on it ASAP, before Cet gets side tracked by another project. I think Effingham's got a good point about the aluminum. It's light like plastic, but it's not an insulator, and will be more comfortable ...

The type 4 (iv) is like this: http://www.armourarchive.org/patterns/wisby/patterns/wisby3.gif I'm pretty sure that Cet is talking about the type 1 which would be like this, but with fewer plates around the body, and only 2 breast plates. Not 3: http://armourarchive.org/patterns/wisby/patterns/wisby1...

So, there will be 4 plates in the front, but what about the rear? Will it be a mirror of the front, or will the plates be a wrap of vertical plates as on the Wisby #1? (or is the back not included?) I'm a 46" sounds good to me, as I'll be wearing it over an aketon and mail. What is the turn aro...

I was looking for a helm just like that when I was interested in 15th century. That is really sweet.
A similar helm from Best Armour (their #SS 1.2) would be around $380-$400 + shipping. So it looks like a great deal to me.
I'm staying planted in the 14th century for now though.

I'm interested, and even contemplated getting a Windrose set recently during their sale, but really don't want it built up to leather. And it seemed like a lot of money for something I would have to disassemble and re-assemble on linen canvas. I'd prefer a kit of plates. Preferably type 1, with or w...

Eff's avatars are beyond compare (he does them in different sizes too, so it's not just an avatar. He can do big splashes for web sites or you can print it out or get T-shirts/coffee mugs from Cafe press). He really has a knack for bringing a blazon to life.

I agree with Cet re: the breastplate and helm being later then 1340. The viking/saxon style tunic needs to be taken right out. Splint defenses were worn by Germans into the 15th century, so I say keep the helm, bp, vams and greaves. Buy a jupon like windrose sells with the bag sleeves and change you...

Leather is like most raw materials, the more you purchase at one time, the more savings you get in a per unit measure. You say they charge .15 cents a square inch. Armor/sole bends are usually sold by the pound, which tells me you're looking at a thick vegetable tanned or latigo piece. If it's black...

I didn't consider it a big deal. The hand stitching just makes the garmet a bit more realistic to me. I think the cut is great and I like how it follows the arm tapering to the wrist. Another point is that the SCA minimum is actually .0625" (not 16ga). Stainless steel 16 ga (.0625") meets the society minimum. But cold rold steel 16 ga (.0598") does not. You need to move up to 15 ga to meet the SCA minimum in thickness.

I think you'd have to do it in 14ga for the simple aspect of mass as Blackoak notates. But you wouldn't have to go as neck straingly heavy as 12 or 10 ga to be dent resistant. The spring would make it ducal quality for those guys that go up against the heavy hitters and don't like tapping out dents ...
