There's SOME evidence of gorgets, but they're mail, sometimes with a metal or splinted collar on the neck.

As for the dyes rubbing off easy, that is a concern. The hide that we start with is chrome tanned and dyed at the plant where it is cured. I think sealing it with nuetral shoe polish should readily solve the problem. I've tried dying chrome tanned leathers before with poor results. Like some Ritt d...

Thanks for the support. I don't want any donations. But if there's something there that looks like something you want, then I'll be appreciative to be able to sell it to you. The rosary is just something I made of spare beads from a rosary I wanted to make for my own kit. I'm non-denominational (rai...

Cian's Livin' in the ghetto sale & More stuff
UPDATE: Dagger, houppe and rosary are gone. But kidney belt, bascinet shell (not getting reply from interested party), and added a few items. Woke up this morning with the intent of running out to get some laundry detergent, and found my car had been sacked. The thieves tried to steal it, but all th...

Here are a couple more linear rosaries I made with extra beads. Both are "twenties". The one on the left is of blue corals (11mm) and immitation pearls (12mm). The one on the right is; red coral (9mm) and blue coral (11mm) and immitation pearls (8mm). http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2321/24...

I have no evidence of shells ever being used for beads or gauds. I was looking for imitation pearls originally, and couldn't find anything that didn't look to manufactured (glass or plastic), but did find shells that cost practically nothing and looked very organic. And like Bernhard notates, I knew...

A bit of rosary bling
I made a rosary to hang from my belt. (Any 14th century Christian gentry would hardly be found without one, I bet). Due to sumptuary laws, it would have been the one piece of jewelry I could wear without getting into trouble for looking too flashy. Coral was a well known adornment for rosaries, whic...

Thanks, Josh! I was thinking it seamed to make too much sense to split it like a jacket, but it probably reduced the shirt's effectiveness. Since it's being worn beneath a solid churburg, it probably doesn't matter that it's split for it's ability to protect. Should I, or was it period to add a leat...

How a man shall be armed? No really... How?
I'm having an issue with getting in and out of my maille haubergeon with an aketon/gambeson on. It literally wears me out, wriggling in and out of the thing (It's a typical 54" size, and I have a 42" chest without the gambeson..about a 45 with the gambeson). If I have my elbows and vambrac...

This is a bit long overdue, but I received one of Michael's costrels. I just want to take a moment to recommend it. If you are getting a stimulus check, I suggest you set aside part of it to get one of his bottels or costrels. I usually use a nice banded/turned wood canteen, but it's going to collec...

Re: Arrow Spine Weight Questions
My comments are in red Ok, I'm confused... The more I'm reading about spine weights and what would work for my 66" tall 36# recurve, the more and different answers I'm finding... I'm toying with the idea of either Sitka Spruce or (gasp) period'ish Ash arrows. I know that Ash will be less forgi...

Those are guisarmes. They're thinner then the English bill (brown bill, forest bill). Guisarmes are a primarily contiental weapon. You can get them here:

He's probably looking for something like this (maybe with a bit more hook to it):

Though, the one pictured is $330+shipping.
Here's a picture of a farm type that Chef aludes to:

I would put forth that the picture in the osprey book is of kit items that might be used in 1490 (late 15th cen), not necessarily 14th. Though some ite...

What can I say?...I coveted this bow greatly for over a year before I could afford to commission it. And now I've outgrown the weight. Now that I'm upto 65#, It's like pulling a kids bow. FYI, a bit of trivia. When you pull a bow (properly), you exert 6 times the weight of the bow's draw in force on...

That was a purchase from a master bowyer. If you see it in person, handle it and see the circumscribed arc, you can tell it was finely tillered by a true bowyer. The tips are also perfectly placed. Another sign of someone that knows what they are doing with a livery bow. I don't have the patience to...
