Re: Making a knight's sword belt...

There's a pretty extensive write-up by Galfrid atte Grene about plaque belts on the following thread. I think it answers a lot of questions you and others might have, and brings up a lot more about what we don't know about plaque belts. Mac contributed some very good points that he shouldn't have to...

Re: Making a knight's sword belt...

Up until 1350 they appear to be primarily buckle and chape. By the 1370's almost all effigies/brasses in England appear to have some form of plaque belt. So, I would go with a plaque belt of some sort. Either hinged plaques, or plaques mounted (riveted?) on a foundation (fabric or leather). There ar...

That's not a klappvisor. It's a side-pivoting visor. Nice because you don't see many visored helms that aren't either klap' or static.

Re: Making a knight's sword belt...

Awesome belt Cian. Question...would they have two seperate belts, one for while in armour, and one for their regular clothing? Reason I ask is that the ones depicted on Effigies don't look to be adjustable...and wearing them without armour would make them pretty loose. I am considering making this ...

You could use iron work rosettes and alternate with belt stiffeners make a belt like this one: http://effigiesandbrasses.com/monuments/peter_de_grandison/image/5302/original/ These are brass rosettes from an ironworks company. I think they were only about $2 a piece. http://farm3.staticflickr.com/25...

Looks like the half shoulders are $19.99. The double (full) shoulders are a bit more depending on thickness.
Unless you mean there is a sale that they are having that is unadvertised.

Re: Something New from Otto's Armoury - proto chape

I think it looks great. I tried to do the same thing in a 22 ga sheet of steel and it turned out looking like a mutated clam with goiter problems. I agree that a chape really needs to be fitted to a scabbard for sizing, but all chapes for sale I've seen come in pre-determined sizes. Usually your opt...

I have a bit of an issue with the maison St. Claire website. Specifically that most if not all of the illustrations are early 15th century and not late 14th century as you indicated your interest. The other is that the pictures are displayed without context or information. Under the heading of Tunic...

It is a risk you take. But it's a gamble you have to accept yourself. A general rule in life is "only an idiot makes a bet that he can't afford to lose." Sorry. I'm an idiot. This is only a guess, but since they were made of drawn wire, they probably used a form with posts to wrap the wire around. Nails through a piece of wood. Without knowing the type and oz. of the leather, it's hard to say. The belly edges like that tend to have a big variance in the thickness anyhow. Along the straight edge, it could be close to 10 oz. and then on the jagged edge as little as 4 oz. If it's red latigo, it could be desirable for strappin...

You've completely overlooked the obvious. The reason it's so expensive is that it is an EXACT replica of a deepeeka piece, down to the cheap pressed brass rivet escucheon plates. After the final shaping of the wooden core and lacquer, wrap it tightly with blue painters tape. Smooth out any wrinkles in it all around. Make sure it's sticking snugly to all surfaces of the wood.
