it is the density that seems to be of concern. Remember you can always add mass to a helmet if that is an issue, but rarely remove mass...
Really? A pound of each weighs about the same?!
Wow. I did NOT know that.

They're about the same in mass. Per cu. in mild steel and 400 stainless are ~.280 lb. The 300 series stainless is a tad heavier at ~.290 lb./cu. in.

I have bad news (In the tone of your doctor)
If you go to sca events or activities, you're considered "in" the SCA.
It's sort of like going to a christian church. You don't have to buy what the minister is selling, but if you go, then you're considered a christian.

Re: Finally got my 14th century kit 2.0 put together
If going for german, I would go with a klapp and a jupon in addition to the splints. Possibly even going onion top. I would also look to a specific effigy to emulate so that there is less likelyhood to get cross-contamination from regional/chronological changes. For the CoP, I would once again look ...

Primarily; I would also suggest you look at the article from Tasha about making a surcoat. The rectangle with the hole in the middle that creates the large swath of exposure on your thighs is probably the most anachronistic part of your kit. No matter what period you're going with. Optimally, local chapters will have loaner armor that doesn't look like complete ass so that A) People don't have to go out of pocket before seeing if they even like participating in the hobby and B) aren't feeling embarrassingly silly to put on and get involved. I'm not going to sell just the rivets. That would be silly. And then people that only want to buy the rings with rivets won't want them, and then I'll be stuck with rings and no rivets. I've ordered rings a couple of times, and you always wind-up with a derth of rivets to rings. Personally, I prefer...

I love KOA. They feed my addiction like a drug dealer. If you buy 2 packs of 50 (actually 110 rings and rivets), the price drops to $4.50 ($2.25 ea.) + shipping because you save me $0.50 on the bubble envelope. Having had issues with By The sword in the past, I'd strongly suggest saving up a few more dollars and getting gambesons from Ice Falcon. He does light weight and regular padded ones (with a wool fill) for cooler temps and more cushion.

Look into the I.33 manuscript (also called the "Tower Fechtbuch" or Walpurgis) dated to the late 13th century. It is an instructional book, one of if not THE earliest, on sword fighting. The illustrations mostly show a monk and an apprentice doing the positions.

I tried using a 12 oz. cotton drop cloth for a canopy, then it rained. It saturated it, and was like a t-shirt from the washing machine. No comparision to Sunforger or preshrunk marine/boat canvas. You're also going to get some rigidity out of all of the large flat rivet heads that are practically touching each other. There's no where for the leather to bend.

I received the kettle helm from Gryffinclaw (Troy) almost a week ago, but had not had time to put my thoughts together on it. I'm very happy with the purchase. Look to the paintings of the period. Specifically, if you google image search for Vittore Carpaccio and the Martyrdom of the Pilgrims and the Funeral of St. Ursula (cir 1495). There is an archer with a reflex bow with rigid syahs. His arrow case is not unlike several others seen in various paintings...
