Re: Cheapest and Simplest Persona to do Well (No Nekkid Celt

By the phrasing, I'm assuming you mean soft kits, not fighting stuff. I see atleast a couple of major problems with the question. With regards to the SCA, everyone is intended to be portraying nobility (and nobility wouldn't dress like the peasentry). And nothing that is done well, will be particula...

Re: The Official Unofficial Pennsic Update tread... (OUPU)

I think last year around the middle of war week, the total gate was like 14,000 or so. And many of those people, may not even know what the SCA is. Seeing as how the main battlefield has had about 2,000 people combined in both armies, I think 10,000 may be a bit crowded as I roll it over in my mind....

If anyone else is thinking about picking up one of the "Track of the Wolf early Scottish ballock style dirks". I think there are a couple of things that you should know. 1) they are unsharpened. not just dull but whith a 1/16" flat edge that takes considerable work to get to a basic a...

Looks like something called "cranbarry Moldable Field Hockey" guards. Just googling "field hockey shin guards" comes up with about a dozen different brands that look identical but with logos splashed on them.

Champions of virtue. Combatants have to choose a virtue (beauty, love, honor, charity, humility, etc.) to champion. (draw from a hat a good time before the event). Combatants can gain extra points for modifying their accoutrements (banners, shields, surcoat) with icons of their virtue, or doing some...

I picked-up a couple of cheapo $5 lanterns from the local hardware store and pulled out the glass and installed some horn panes from Mike a bit over a month ago. I really like these because 1) they're about 1/5 the weight of the glass versions. 2) No worries about reaching into my camp box to find b...

I have a couple of windlass swords, but I'm not "feeling" the European Sword. For the price it's difficult to pass on, and I will give you that. It has high ratings from Sword Buyers Guide. I will go on to say that 14th century swords are very well represented by both Windlass, CAS Iberia ...

Re: Elbows with rerebraces/vambraces?

Unless you have lames for articulation, I believe that connecting either the rebrace or the vam directly to the cop will greatly impede movement. I believe that pointing floating metal pieces to your mail or garment is the best guess. Note that most effigies do not show the ties, and so they were pr...

Because of the 3-dimensionality of these, I'm starting to get the feeling that they may have had secret compartments. Perhaps with smoke grenades, and batarangs, and high strength, yet narrow cable for repelling down castle walls. Anyone with me on this?

Re: Review of the first Icefalcon Lightweight Arming Coat

I just received mine in the mail about 15 minutes ago. And just took it off. I like the way it feels in the body and arms. I've had issues in the past where the garments don't fit up under the pits well, and movement is an issue. My only few criticisms are primarily design issues; 1) the collar sits...

Re: Kidney belt recomendation?

For the SCA minimum you need to cover the floating ribs and the kidneys which depending on whom you ask, are a good distance above your hip bones. Eventually I just stitched a pocket in my gambeson for a 7" x 10" plate to sit in. The larger the plate the more it will distribute the force o...

The ones made out of cut flat stock just look too...flat. On effigies they sit so proud they were almost undoubtedly cast (though possibly with a hollow to reduce weight). They will have to be glued to keep the fletches in place while you bind them. Once you get used to it, binding fletches goes pretty quickly. I can nock out a dozen arrows in an evening sitting in front of the boob-tube. When you're trimming your fletches (even if you're purchasing them pre cut), you...

It's inches times the weight at length of draw. You'll need a bow spring scale or possibly a fish or hunter's scale. It's basically a tube or electonic box with a hook on it and a spring inside that measures the force exerted on it. Hook the string in the center and draw pull the string back to full...

I believe last year° there was a modification to the rules that SCA crossbows also have a minimum draw weight of 400 in*pd to prevent some nerf herder from bringing toys on the field that take no effort to draw and load, and shoot creme puffs at fighters. 400 isn't really all that heavy, but the str...

I know it's cheating, but you could pick-up a basic cedar chest at Joann fabrics in slightly larger dimensions. They run about $80+ regular, but if you can locate one of their "40% or 50% off 1 single item" coupons, they can be about $40-$45. Toss on some iron hardware, and you've got a ni...
