Re: Scabbard/leatherworking help
Neatsfoot oil will soak in and keep the leather supple, but it will not provide an external barrier. A couple of appliactions of fiebings leather balm/atom wax, furniture paste wax or car wax will seal the surface and add a layer of protection from water stains, oils from hands/foods, and minimal ab...

Re: Fiebing's oil vs alcohol Black
I've had similar lifeless/shallow color from institutional leather dyes. I won't buy them again. I think the Pro oil dyes are really for pros as well. I only used it once, but didn't like it (medium brown). The spirit based dyes seem to be kinder for those of us that sort of slap on the color and ho...

Re: Badges ::: S.C.A.
I would say it probably conflicts. Initially, I thought that badges were not checked against heraldry until I tried to pass my own badge. My badge that you see the left (Three gold sea shells inverted per pall conjoined in base) is NOT registered in the SCA. The reply I got from the kingdom herald w...

Thanks Bertus for that and for the translation. Right in the time period I'm interested in, and includes prices of some goods (atleast as assessed by an appraiser for the value those items used and in unknown condition). Very interesting.

Medieval source (trades) of iron stock
Out of curiosity. I have a question specific to the middle of the 14th century, so let me preface this about what I think I know, and please feel free to correct or interject more info. I know that they didn't have medieval Home Depots to pick up a decent supply of structural steel, but I'm also pre...

Shipping has gotten insane. I sent a 1 lb. box to the UK last week, and it was $30 (no insurance or tracking even) when the USPS web site gave an estimate of $18 for a 1.5 lb. box. And the customs forms you have to fill-out are a 15 minute waste of time. If I had a business, people over seas would j...

There's a class action law suit against manufacturers for the zinc content in old denture creams like fixodent and poligrip, believed to have caused zinc toxicity.

Re: SCA device - head position
A bigger problem might be that wolf heads (and coyote heads, and dog heads) are pretty common in SCA heraldry. And they would need to find something with considerable differences. I'm not sure a head turned upward would be a considerable difference at all. A quick romp through online OandA found ove...

I couldn't find anything specifically stating CA equipment limits in your Kingdom either, but several references to "as SCA standards". If so, heavy crossbows are limited to 1000 inch-pound (draw weight x length of draw) if you're using silo-flex ammo. And 600 inch-pound if you're using fi...

These are also not by-my-hand ones (these are ones that I made), also in a similar style. The later ones I did actually have curved straps that run along the grip inter-connecting the pommel and hilt (made out of tube stock rather than flat stock). http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3330/3579228197_c5f8...

I'm just showing off something that is pretty neat here, because I know the maker won't toot his own horn. I didn't make these. They were made by Brent/Sir Luther Anshelm at Anshelm Arms. Re: A question about the approach to combat archery.
One problem with siloflex is that the ammo doesn't want to go where you point it. They have the badminton birdie effect with drag. Also UMMW and rubber stopper ammo both are overly soft for impact recognition, compared to Baldar's blunts which are still soft compared to being hit with rattan. Atleas...

This is just a suggestion based upon my experience, but I think you might want to do applique if they are in those sizes. Patches in those sizes are not only going to be costly, but they are also going to be very stiff. I'm just guessing but it sounds like you want to do some livery (?). You see lar...

They look good. It took me a while to figure out why they looked different. I haven't seen elbows with the crease at 90 degrees to the line of the arm, before. Many of us have had that same thought about 100 bums in CA gear. Sadly the equipment is more cost prohibitive than the bums.
-Cian (who has 3 CA crossbows and 3 kettle helms...but has yet to find bums that won't run off with his equipment and sell it for bourbon).

S/Gideon has the pouch and bronze dagger already paid for.
But both of the leather belts and the sword-hilted black dagger are available as are both paternosters.
The black belt and silver hardware with the black dagger and the bone paternoster would look pretty sweet together.

If you don't want something made in the east, you're probably looking at buying something from a company like Albion, Valiant, ATrim or Arms & Armor. And none of those are what I would call cheap. A&A and Albion go to great pains to make models that are as close tolerance to extant examples ...
