I'll speak up as a warranted Caidan marshal. Most of us will accept modern shoes of dark leather or canvas with no visible logos, sport-shoe striping, bright white soles, etc. If the Nike swoosh is, say, black-on-black, then it can be a close call whether it's too obvious or not. Lots of guys wear w...

The only reason Luther isn't in the same league with Mac, Thaden, and those guys is that he still tries to balance high quality and historic accuracy with the needs of SCA fighters. I have no doubt he could produce work of the absolute highest level if he ever focused on it, and what he does produce...

I'm 57, born in February of 1952. And you, Aaron, can attest to my active status, as can several others on the Archive. I knew of someone out in the western reaches who continued to fight into his 60s, but that was some time ago. One of the Houghtons, as I recall. The last time I saw His Grace Will...

In my persona story, "Caid" is the name of a round table, or tournament company, formed in Cyprus between the 2nd and 3rd Crusades.

Only in a few kingdoms. In most of the SCA thrusts on the side or top of the head are good, but must be full force, unlike a face thrust that is lighter.

I'm not sure, but I think Meridies may be one of the no head thrust kingdoms...check with your local Marshal.

Hit it first with "Brasso," then finish with a rouge cloth. That's as clean as you're gonna get it, so if it's not the color you want at that point, it's a different composition alloy and that's that.

The masters of the day who were writing about their techniques are pretty clear about the foolhardy nature of excessive force, overcommitment, etc. In fact, Fiore refers to the fully-committed, big arcing, overhead blow as the "peasant's cut." Nothing a trained swordsman would ever do.
