Lamellar is appropriate for a Byzantine portrayal of that era.
The idea that adopting Byzantine arms was particularly popular among Latin crusaders, while widespread in the SCA, is highly conjectural and supported by very little (if any) evidence, AFAIK.

Everything Lawrence said, plus: The biggest trick to using a jeweller's saw is you want to keep it as close as possible to exactly vertical as you are sawing. This will feel awkward until you get the hang of it. Also, lotsa practice. I still remember the elation as an apprentice when I started havin...

I've never actually done this; I'm making it up as I type, so take it for what it's worth. I might try snipping a small patch of the same canvas and slipping it under the tear before gluing and pressing the tear back together; then touch-up paint the whole area. Unless the canvas is really thick, th...

I have 2 hauberks, one weighs about 40# and the other is about 25#; I wear the heavy one for practice and the light one for tourneys. My helmet is pretty light, but I don't remember exactly. Stone masonry bearing walls are basically not done anymore; there are very few engineers who would know how to design them to modern codes, very few masons who would know how to bulid them, and the materials themselves are prohibitively expensive these days. All any of us build with anymore is stone...

Lady Ashley, Welcome to the Armour Archive, it will be a pleasure to provide you with both useful information and entertainment, and to get back the same from you in due course. The most important thing in a line is that the unit trains to work together. I know of units of all spears, units of all shields, and mixed units that are all excellent; what they have in common is that they actually train together instead of being individual fighters all year and then trying to fig...

The other thing you need to know about people's choices of armor in the SCA is that our type of fighting is not the same thing as actual Medieval combat. We have a certain set of rules that make it in many ways like a modern sport, and, just like in modern sports, some people choose equipment they t...

Take your sun hunting; let him be the one to kill a buck. Save the blood. Quench the sword in a mixture of oil and the stag's blood (Jim Hrisoulas can give you exact proportions so there's enough oil to do its job...quenching in pure blood, besides requiring more than one stag's worth of said blood,...

It is a sad fact that there will never be a shortage of asshats in this world. While righteous indignation is occasionally satisfying, I would suggest your own sang-froid would be better served by not giving this cad the gift of very much more of your attention. Is their ranks? Sergant? Captain? General? I am aware of the nobe ranks such as duke or earl but i was curoius if their was military ranks. With the exception of the Peerages, most rank titles are kingdom-specific, and there is a lot of variation. For instance, in the Middle Kingdom, "Serjeant...

I'd be surprised if the fairly unanimous vote on that didn't go to Dan at House of the Wolf.
I'm sure many of us would be happy to help Dan out with the fitting, though.

I am interested in this quest as well, I have wondered about doing some selective enameling and was curious about the process.
