Re: leather sword fittings?
I have seen leather cross guards in use, so it can definitely be done. I'm thinking you'd want to make them of multiple layers of the really heavy leather, sort of the way Vitus makes his axe heads.

I may be interested in the vambraces, but I'm not sure about my finances, so don't hold them for me. If they're still available when I figure out the money, I'll take 'em.

Re: Training, Practice and Evaluation
As much psychological as physical training: I like to have a sword in my hand every day (actually 2, a real sword and an SCA sword) - even if it's just throwing a quick combo on the pell on my way out the door, I want that sword in my hand every day. I use a real sword for slow work on the pell, par...

You are engaged from the time the Marshal calls "lay on." If your opponent offers you the gift of his back, it would be ungracious of you not to accept it.

Re: Oh... the pell....
If I were going to make the perfect pell, I would get a circle of 3/4" plywood and an old tire, with the plywood sized to fit inside the tire. I would then bolt the pell to the plywood using the post base pictured, put it in the tire, and pour concrete in the tire (notice how the tire holds the...

Re: Chigaco screws in splinted limbs
Pro: Very simple and easy to replace.
Con: Tend to come unscrewed pretty easily, so need more of that simple replacing. Definitely use Loctite.
Personally, I use Chicago screws for most of my straps, since those are what need replacing the most, but I use rivets for splints.

Estrella 1992. I was part of a kick-ass household, so we had every kind of fun fighting together in the battles, and I was also about at the peak of my personal fighting ability, so I had a blast on the pick-up field. I particularly remember a great set of fights with this tall skinny kid who was Pr...

Re: Hiding Rawhide Edging?
We used to edge plywood shields thus: 1. Give the edge a bit of bullnose or chamfer. 2. Apply liberal amount of wood glue. 3. Apply one layer of heavyish webbing just a little wider than the edge. 4. Apply more wood glue; you want the webbing soaked through. 5. Apply another layer of thinner & w...

I find the most important thing in a comfortable cup is the sides being soft instead of hard all the way around; my preferred model is the Bike Proflex 2, pictured below. I have not found a jock by itself or shorts with a pocket very effective at keeping it in place, I prefer a jock with compression...

Hmmm, we don't get so many little mousies around here, it's mostly big ole rats. I've found keeping terriers to be the best rat solution, and you get a best friend out of the deal.

Re: Hammock time!
I am curious whether there is substantial evidence for seamen bringing hammocks ashore. It certainly makes sense that, if camping ashore, stringing up a hammock might be more comfortable than sleeping on the ground, but I wonder whether we even know how much it was actually done.

If I showed up at a tourney and realized I had forgotten pants to cover my mutt-buggly leg armour, even though it is a pair of splinted leather cuisses and steel knees that most people would consider acceptible, if notably past their prime, I would withdraw from the lists and go volunteer my service...

I am working on an illegal experiment right now. Going to talk to the KEM (AnTir) about it in July, and then run it to SEM. Basically taking siloflex, cutting it in half, and edging a sword face with it. People around here wrap sticks in rawhide, many to good effect. Unless you are a tall evil left...

I've also found that with some people a little on the thickish side, if I start the fight by demonstrating how hard I can hit, I have less trouble getting them to take later shots, even though they're not nearly as hard.

Unless it's an obvious attempt to draw a shot, I usually throw at whatever looks like the best available opening, even if best doesn't happen to be very good. My goal is to make my opponent move, thereby giving me another (hopefully better) opening.
