Re: Preference in opponents's weapon style?

I don't find certain weapon styles fun to fight; I'll fight them if I draw them in the lists, but for practice and pick-ups I'll generally take a pass unless I feel I need the specific practice.

T'ai Chi has specific movements that relate to SCA fighting. The big problem with trying to study T'ai Chi (Taijiquan if you're a commie) in the US is that there are upwards of a dozen unqualified teachers for every good one. Look for a teacher who A) knows his lineage and is happy to share it, B) k...

Unless you're really awesome, a lone fighter in a war is as useless as tits on a boar, so it won't really matter what kind of shield you have.

Join a unit. Train with your unit. Use whatever kind of shield your unit uses.

There is no maximum shield size SCA-wide or in Caid (I have no idea about any other Kingdoms).

There have, in the past, been size limitations and minimum size:weight ratios in Caid, but they've been gone for years now. I'm pretty sure there have never been any limits SCA-wide.

Re: Heater with Boss ?

I tried to get mine at the actual center of balance. Hang the shield by one corner and draw a vertical line (a plumb bob helps) down from there, then hang from the other corner and do the same; where the lines cross is the center of balance. Many people like the boss a little above the center of bal...

Re: A Question of Grace

In Caid, it was "regular practice" amongst a group of fighters to give up and match anything they took because they saw it as unfair. I would say it's regular practice here to give up an arm, but not a leg. There have never been more than a handful of fighters who would come down to their...

Power comes from hip rotation. Hip rotation comes from pushing off the ground. You push off the ground with your back foot (and your front foot too, to a lesser extent.) When you pivot, or raise your heel, you are not pushing as effectively. So, I guess my old Sifu who could throw me across the roo...

Events used to be show up, set up tournament, fight or watch tourney, set up for feast, feast and dance. Maybe there was an A&S competition or demonstration going on, but just as likely not. At that time, however, Heavy Combat WAS the FOCUS of the SCA. Maybe at one time, but not in the time I'v...

Realistically, if the 10,000 hour figure is correct, then I doubt there would be many- if ANY- fighters that have met that mark. You are talking 5 hours a week for 20 years to reach that goal. There are also a whole lot of variables that any hard figure just doesn't take into account. Sure...but......

OK, for a bit of background on my perspective: I started in my late teens, was getting pretty good for an unbelt in my early 20s but quit before reaching knight level; then I came back in my late 30s; I am 44 now and just getting back to the same level I was at when I was 24. The 10,000 number itself is more likely from Bruce Lee, though his is on mastering a move, not muscle memory specifically.

Just a few observations: 1. I’m not sure how important general physical conditioning is; on one hand, you don’t see a lot of fat guys among the absolute best of the best in SCA combat, but on the other hand, it’s hard to say whether they’re great fighters because they’re in great shape, or they’re i...
