Re: SCA rules question
the single sword rule.. two opponants are fighting single sword.. both are wearing gauntlets on the off hand.. one throws a shot at the others head.. the gauntleted hand takes the shot.. it was THERE already... that gauntleted hand is struck substituting for the head shot, the ARM is now considered...

Re: Striking illegal targets
I generally take wrist shots, not because I think they should be good but because even with a demi-gauntlet they really really hurt and make me not want to keep fighting with that hand. I have occasionally, in a single-sword fight or a long sword fight when I had one hand off the weapon, instinctive...

Re: Stabbing quillions
Don't know how they do it in Aethelmaerc, but for our experimental half-swording rules in Caid, it goes like this: 1. If you have both hands on the hilt (or one hand on the hilt and the other empty), then it can only be used like a normal SCA bastard/great sword - cut or thrust with the blade, butt-...

OT: Anyone need a BIG light table in So CA?
I am trying to get rid of a ginormous print shop light table that I no longer have room for. It is mostly intended for anyone local who can pick it up, but I would consider freighting it if you really want to pay that much. This has a glass area of approximately 40" x 60", so it is plenty ...

Re: Are you worried about being injured when you fight?
I have never particularly worried about injury, in SCA fighting, other martial arts, or any other activity (or, more accurately, activities where I would worry about injuries, like NHB MMA, I just don't do at all). This attitude has caused me serious problems with horses and motorcycles, but only an...

You cannot hit him with a sword
Or even a misericord
You cannot hit him with an axe
You cannot do it, let it pass
You cannot hit him with a mace
Though you be a great mace ace
Of all the ways to hit a man
YOU CANNOT HIT HIM IN THE HAND!

Yes, people have done it. It won't last as long as a leather COP, but it is a good inexpensive solution for people starting out.

Re: The poleaxe, armour and SCA. Looking for guidence.
With that kit, put either a fighting houppelande or jupon over the plastic breastplate and you'll be above the median for accurate appearance in the SCA. You want to add splints to the vambraces, not for appearance reasons but because your arms are more vulnerable when using a polearm than with swor...

Re: Brass Jewelry
Maybe you're supposed to cut through the foam board at the same time as the brass? I can see that making sense for very thin sheets. I've never heard of it, either, but adding a backing with very thin metal might make sense. Personally, I'd be much more inclined to use a piece of heavier scrap meta...

I have fought in kote without any additional reinforcement; nothing got broken, but direct shots to the hands sure did smart. If I were to do it again, I'd at least want additional hard material on the thumb.

Re: fighting with missing fingers
Make sure your friend learns to fight with a whole-hand grip on his sword (Bellatrix style); the style of blow lots of people teach where you grip with only the first fingers and close the hand just before impact would be a lot harder (thought not impossible) to master without the middle finger.

I don't know if there's an overall "Caidan" look, but I have noticed that whoever the hot sticks of the moment are, it seems like overnight 1/2-3/4 of the fighters adopt their shield style. Once upon a time, Caid was pretty much all shoulder-to-shoulder chin-to-crotch heaters; then Duke Iv...

I think it's a no-brainer (pun intended) that frequent and/or severe brain injuries can't be good for one's long term cognitive function; it is entirely possible that Mr. Bradshaw is suffering earlier and/or more severe loss of cognitive function than the average person his age. Lot's of people do l...
