I actually have extra-light-sensitive eyes and for many years the tint was part of the prescription for me. Eventually I got so tired of myself looking like a dweeb at events that I decided to tough it out and let my eyes burn.

In the SCA, it means "not a member of the Order of Chivalry." Anyone who thinks squires are "belted" needs a lesson in the difference between knights and squires, preferably at the ends of several knights' sticks. (Sorry if that sounds harsh, but people who think of squiredom as ...

I believe Duke Edward in Caid was close to or over 50 when he started fighting; he was definitely over 50 and had come back from a heart attack when he won his first Crown .

Hinged coronets are quite common among historic examples. They're also extremely convenient for us modern folks who need to fit all our stuff in the back of a car.

One on one, spear vs sword and board? I think the spear god is probably in trouble most of the time. I wouldn't call that guy a spear "god." Almost all spearmen would be in trouble 1-on-1 against S/S; the spear gods are the very small number who aren't . When I'm the shieldman in that fig...

Many "renaissance" faires are pretty lax about the period they want to see people dressed for, but some are more careful: given that and the subject matter you are presenting, you probably want to aim at mid- to late-15th C(ish). If you're willing to put in some "sweat equity," p...

Two weeks back, I took a shot just like this. Sir Donas threw a shot that I read as a fake and put no strength behind my sword which was sitting there. He hit my sword, hard. My sword hit me in the head, hard. I took it. Myself, I really hate that old school of thought where if the weapon hits anyt...

I live in a kingdom that has required vambraces for most of my time in the SCA and all of my fighting career. "Sponsoring" an eric is a relatively new thing in Caid, don't know if it's done in other kingdoms or not. Essentially, it comes down to it being hard to get enough people to herald and marshal, so "sponsoring" an eric is all about making sure it has enough of both. In return, the...

I recommend you not spend a ton of money on your first kit; you will have a much better idea what you want for armour when you've been fighting a while, and sinking thousands into your kit then realizing it isn't really what you want is a drag. I often wear a sword, but it is distinctly not a period thing to do for most of us. Wearing swords with civilian clothing was uncommon until fairly late in the SCA period - you see it in the 16th C, and there is some indication of it in the 15th in the fact that we know masters were teaching "b...
