Banners were _very_ important in medieval battle- I discuss the subject in _Soldiers' Lives through History: The Middle Ages_ 192-3 and 197-199, with refrences. Where can one find this writing? Too bad there's not a "let me google that for you" for Amazon... http://www.amazon.com/Soldiers...

T-tunic made from an old muslin bed sheet. And I mean a sheet old and thread-bare enough that my mother was willing to let me cannibalize it (I was 12) - you could practically see through it. It survived, IIRC, about 3 events.

There is nothing wrong with being in the SCA only for the fighting. If you're good enough to be winning tourneys, then you better be dressed decently when you come into Court to accept your kudos. If you're good enough to be winning the kind of tourneys that come with reponsibility, that's a differe...

My old helmets tend to find their way either into the loaner gear or directly to a needy newbie. Now, hauberks, on the other h...

A tee shirt so the kidney belt doesn't chafe.
A wide weightlifting belt worn high up to cover kidneys.
A linen tunic.

I'm thinking about getting a hexpads shirt and maybe ditching the kidney belt (I'll have to see how I feel about the hexpads and mail being enough kidney protection).

Another consideration in the price/protection/accuracy balance is that for those of us doing pre-14C, gauntlets would be no more accurate than baskets (although I am thinking of doing a nice pair of mail mittens like Brother Amos's).

Allow me to clarify. The hilt didn't start out loose, it got looser and looser as I used it. I re-peened it down tight again, then used it some more and it got looser again. This says soft tang to me.

I would personally not trust my Del Tin for very much heavy use; I did one afternoon of test-cutting with it and the hilt was rattling loose, which gives me the feeling the tang is way too soft.
