Sorry for my last post - I'm surfing with a migrane... Tybolt, I think the "plainness" of the spike is the angle in which the picture was taken. Looks like bad lighting to me for the spike. Wasters?

Somewhere on the board, someone had a link to an online supplier of wasters (I sure hope I have the right name - the wooden practice swords). Anyone care to share that link again?

Egfroth, the reason your pictures aren't showing up is because you are using Geocities. They don't allow pictures to be displayed the way you are trying. They want everyone to go to the web page so they can put all their banner crap on everyone elses screens.

Oh, another thought - If your friend is going to portray late period (for byzantines that is...) just about any helm from Europe would work too, since they traded back and forth extensively.

On helmets, you won't really find much of anything that is SCA legal (if it matters...) The images I've seen (I only have a couple of books) show just a metal skullcap and maille drapery. Personally I've ordered this helm from Gundo with some modifications. I'm gonna hang maille from it to make it l...

Lamellar and Maille was the most common armour used by the Byzantines. In the 14th Century, just about any armour was available, as the byzantine trade routes took them to britain, spain, down the silk road, etc. This is a good site for ~10th century info. Egfroth will enlighten ya further when he g...

Naval Jelly is concentrated phosphoric acid in 2nd-day-of-the-flu-snot consistancy. It takes rust off pretty quickly, but you need to treat the surface very soon after rinsing it off, or it'll rust again.
